The social and educational importance of secondary characters in the tragedies of Sophocles, Antigone (442/441 BC.), Oedipus King (430/429 BC.) and Oedipus at Colonus (401 BC.), as primary sources, is provided. The tragedies were staged in Athens in the 5th century BC when the city-state underwent several transformations. A historical analysis showed that social transformations were enhanced by trade and by the rise of a new non-aristocratic social sector which enriched itself by commercial activities. The fragmentation and weakening of patriarchal power, which was also losing its influence with the disorganization of the genteel society, was also one of its effects. The replacement of the genos by the polis modified the role of religion which did not maintain its guiding stance in man´s life. It was rather used by lawmakers as a resource to maintain citizen united in a common cult to the city-state. Further, the oikos did not gather any more the community around its homestead and its laws; in other words, the family became part of a larger social organization called the city. The above changes caused conflicts with which the Greeks had to live with in the wake of the disorder in family relationships, inside the interior of the oikos and within the new structure of the polis. It is important to note that these changes brought about new ways to create a new man for the polis, with a different re-ordination of social relationships to substitute the ancient form of living in a genteel community. Tragedy, created by poets who were the Greek educators par excellence, was employed by the elite of Athens as an instrument in the education of the citizen and in the construction of the man in the street. The main aim of current analysis was to show the importance of secondary characters in Sophocles´ plays and the manner the tragedy playwright proposed a model of the ideal man or models of men (citizens and common people) living in the city. The analysis of Sophocles´ tragedies discusses the social function and the educational role of the tragedies and thus their formative contributions during Antiquity. Current research also tried to foreground, without exhausting the theme, the importance of Greek tragedy in research on the Classics and on the History of Education, based on literature as a source. In fact, there was intentionality in Sophocles to propose the characterization of his secondary characters as models of the ideal citizen and/or man of the people who should be emulated by the Athenians aiming at seeking the common good and social harmony in a strife-ridden society.pt
