The heart has an important electrical activity as part of its functioning, which is related to the autonomic nervous system. Various heart diseases were associated with changes in the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. On the other hand, amplitude and duration changes of the P wave of the electrocardiogram (EKG) are also related to heart disease. Knowing about the capability of acupuncture to interfere with the functioning of the autonomic nervous system and heart, we sought to study in a simple manner and in healthy individuals if such actions translate into changes of the duration of cardiac revolution and P wave. We studied 20 volunteers in lead II of the EKG at three di↵erent times: before the application of acupuncture, a day after the end of the acupuncture’s sessions and three days after the end of the sessions. The selected points for dry puncture were: 07HT (Shénmén), 03HT (Shàohˇai) and 06PC (Nèigu¯an) bilaterally, 20DU (Bˇaihuì) and Yintang for 20 consecutive minutes per session over two weeks for a total of four sessions (two per week). The measurements of each EKG, along with the values of the BMI (body mass index) and STAI Y-2 (State-Treat Anxiety Inventory form Y-2) previously calculated, were subjected to statistical analysis. Significant di↵erences were found between EKGs. Considering that the anatomical structural conditions of the circulatory system should not have undergone significant changes during the study period (two weeks), we may assume that there could only have been cardiac control changes regarding the autonomic nervous system. This study thus shows that the use of manual acupuncture in the selected acupoints for a short period of time induces some changes in the cardiac function of individuals without diagnosed disease and in normal daily life conditions.
