Na espacialidade dos Casinos de Macau : [experiência, morfologia e topologia]

Abstract

O pequeno território de Macau faz-se da hibridez de revoluções culturais de vários tempos, onde à simbiose luso-chinesa se juntou o estilo Vegas. Os resultados desta ‘importação’ são de uma tal magnitude que Macau vive numa condição sobrecarregada onde tudo se faz e se pensa em torno da indústria dos casinos. Da competição desenfreada entre as concessionárias resultam edifícios icónicos que desprezam qualquer preexistência, afectando as dinâmicas urbanas do quotidiano. Erguendo-se imponentemente nas ruas como arquitecturas extravagantes e singulares, os casinos de Macau são, efectivamente, parte preponderante na definição identitária da cidade e, pelas actividades que oferecem, movem um turismo de massas. Estes edifícios pretendem ser cada vez mais e cada vez melhores, pelo que as suas excentricidades vão surgindo mais excêntricas. Oferecem diversificados conteúdos programáticos, revestem-se de variados e caricatos espaços, onde toda a componente sensorial e comunicativa é superlativa, colocando a semântica espacial num segundo plano. Nesse sentido, sob a perspectiva de visitante, a presente dissertação procura, depois de compreender os efeitos dos edifícios no contexto da cidade, investigar a importância e influência do papel do pensamento arquitectónico na experiência do espaço dos casinos de Macau, focando-se no estudo de três casos: Wynn Macau, Grand Lisboa e Venetian Macau. São, então, tomadas diferentes abordagens na análise destes casinos que, complementarmente, nos facultarão chaves para a interpretação espacial de cada um, por forma a identificar e confrontar diferenças e/ou semelhanças nas suas estratégias sensoriais, morfológicas e topológicas.

The small territory of Macau is the result of the hibridity of cultural revolutions over the course of time where, to the luso-chinese symbiosis was later added, in a post-colonial context, the Las Vegas Style. The consequences of this “import” are of such magnitude that Macau currently lives in a overloaded state where everything is done to favor the casino industry. From the rampant competition between concessionaries “autistic” buildings arise with complete disregard for the preexistence and therefore deeply affecting the urban dynamics of the quotidian. Rising imposingly from the streets as iconic and singular pieces of architecture, the Macau casinos play indeed a major role on the definition of Macau contemporary identity and ,due to the activities they hold, potentiate mass tourism. These buildings thrive to be more and more appealing, so their eccentricities are becoming more and more eccentric. They offer very diversified programes and are filled with extravagant and anedoctal places where the sensorial/flashy and communicative component is superlative, at the expense of a proper spatial experience. In this sense, and from the visitors perspective, this dissertion aims to investigate the importance and influence of the architectural thinking on the spatial experience of the Macau casinos, focusing on three case studies: the Wynn Macau, the Grand Lisboa and the Venetian Macau. Different approaches are taken on the analysis of these casinos that, complementarily, will provide us with the tools for the spatial understanding of each casino and, in this way, identify and confront the diferences and/or similarities on their sensorial, morphological and topological strategies.
