O mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça - Das origens aos alvores da Modernidade

Abstract

O trabalho que ora se apresenta evidencia o crescimento da ordem de Cister, a marca que deixou na Europa ocidental do século XII e seguintes, e o importante contributo que os monges agrários deram na construção do Portugal da Reconquista Cristã. Contudo, o principal objectivo é o estudo do mosteiro cisterciense de Santa Maria de Seiça, cuja evolução nos surge como um bom modelo desta dinâmica: soube captar do poder real e de outros doadores, extensas áreas, atrair povoadores para brenhas inóspitas, fazendo delas terras férteis e produtivas, que tão generosamente alimentaram os seus celeiros, satisfizeram as necessidades locais e forneceram excedentes ao reino. Num outro plano, soube gerir a complexa teia de relações regionais, nacionais e internacionais, contribuindo, decisivamente, para o progresso da região em que se implantou. Procurámos identificar os elementos da comunidade conventual que mais se destacaram nestas grandiosas e complexas acções. Ao longo da documentação arrolámos cerca de uma centena de nomes, entre abades, priores, monges e outros oficiais que foram determinantes no desenvolvimento a que assistimos e que foram os principais obreiros na transformação verificada no mítico vale de Seiça. No entanto, uma vida duradoura traz sempre alguns obstáculos. Os sete longos séculos de vida, arrastaram consigo enormes vicissitudes. Não resistiram incólumes à crise monástica da Baixa Idade Média, e passaram, durante três anos, pela extinção (anexação). Porém, em 1559, no âmbito do movimento reformista, recuperaram a sua antiga dignidade, tendo conhecido um novo esplendor, que se manteve até próximo da extinção geral, de todas as ordens religiosas em Portugal, em 1834. Daremos conta das múltiplas acções que os responsáveis do mosteiro tiveram de desencadear e estabeleceremos o necessário fio condutor entre si: cartas de povoação, aforamentos, contendas, concórdias, dificuldades e percalços de vária ordem.

This dissertation focuses on the growth of the Cistercian order and the imprint it left on Western Europe from the 12th century onwards while shedding light on the important role that the agrarian monks played in building the emergent nation of Portugal in Christian Reconquista era. The main aim will be given to the study of the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça, Portugal, whose evolution is paradigmatic of the order’s dynamic: the monastery managed to gather vast extensions of land, from both the Crown and numerous individual donors, while attracting settlers to these inhospitable lands and making them so exceptionally fertile that the crop yields completely filled local barns and also provided a significant surplus to the Crown. The monks were also able to master the complex web of regional, national and even international political relations and contributed decisively to the progress of the Seiça region. We also strived to identify the many abbots, monks and other individuals of the Cistercian monastic community whose actions stood out in contributing to the decisive transformation of the Seiça valley. As is usually the case, long lives take heavy tolls and throughout its seven centuries of existence the monastery suffered countless setbacks: it did not escape the Late Middle Ages monastic crisis unscathed and went as far as extinct for three whole years. It was not until 1559, at the end of the revival movements started in the late 15th century that the monastery recovered its former splendour and dignity that would last until the definitive extinction of all religious orders by the Portuguese Crown in 1834. The many acts of governance the Cistercians had to engage to achieve their purposes will also be detailed: the forals and emphyteusis, the contentions and concords, the many hardships and missteps and the common thread to all this.
