Abstract This report is related to the teaching of Portuguese language literature in the context of Adults Education and Training. Starting with the narration of a special professional experience, using literary texts in Portuguese language, in order to demonstrate that the adult population specifically those who attended the Process of Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competences in CNO - ADICES evinces skills of literary reading literacy. Based on official documents, we have drawn the Portuguese itinerary on the valorization of Lifelong Learning. This concept is emphasized because we believe that each day, in different contexts, such as family, social or professional context, people acquire knowledge and skills. One of the most relevant skills is literacy. After reading several authors and perspectives on the subject, we have concluded that literacy is the mastery of reading, writing and calculus and the ability to make a social use of these skills (OECD, 2002). At the fulcrum of this work’s discussion, the emphasis is put on literary reading literacy. Based on the processes of reading comprehension used in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), namely Finding and Extracting Explicit Information from a Text; Making Direct Inferences; Interpreting and Integrating Ideas and Information and Examining and Evaluating the Content, the Language and Textual Elements, we have established a parallelism with the action of the adult population at issue. Keywords: Literature teaching; Adults Education and Training; Process of Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competences; Lifelong learning; Literary reading literacy; Processes of reading comprehension.
