A Arquitetura da maternidade : reutilização do Complexo da Quinta da Rainha em Coimbra

Abstract

O abandono de alguns edifícios do século 20 juntamente com a atual vontade de restituição das maternidades aos hospitais perfazem os motivos da criação deste trabalho. Esta dissertação pretende mostrar o valor arquitectónico inerente às maternidades assim como refletir acerca do futuro deste tipo de estruturas, numa altura em que atravessam um destino incerto levantado pela contenção de custos gerado pela crise económica existente no país. Projeto então um emprego possível à maternidade existente em Coimbra, Bissaya Barreto, que preserva na sua estrutura novas normas higienistas e o culminar do sonho do médico promotor que dá o nome a esta. A partir do estudo dos modelos arquitectónicos de duas outras maternidades antecedentes a esta de Coimbra, pretendo aferir quais as características que lhe conferem modernidade. Debruça-se por isso este trabalho também no estudo da maternidade Doutor Alfredo da Costa, em Lisboa e Júlio Dinis, no Porto. De modo a manter a assinatura do arquiteto Carlos Ramos e a memória deste inovador complexo dos anos 60, estudo uma utilização viável ao quarteirão no contexto da cidade universitária a partir de um equipamento que se molde ao uso diário dos residentes na cercania reutilizando as instalações da maternidade. Esta investigação vai por isso permitir a compreensão do aparecimento e do desenvolvimento da estrutura Maternidade e questionar o seu futuro, apresentando uma alternativa à sua demolição e abandono.

The continuous desertion of some buildings of the 20th century combined by the restitution of the ancient maternities to the hospitals is the main goal of this scientific research. This dissertation aims to question what is the value of the maternities, as well as what is the best option for their future, in the present time where some of this structures are getting closed facing different destinies. I pretend to model one possible path to the one existing in Coimbra, Bissaya Barreto maternity, that accomplish in its structures new hygienist thoughts as well as the tail-end of the doctor that boosted it. Enumerating two other previous maternities I am able, through the study of their architectural conception, to understand in what ways the modern thought was evident in the one in Coimbra. So, this dissertation also absorb the deep study of the first two built from scratch maternities, the Doutor Alfredo da Costa, in Lisbon, and the Julio Dinis, in Oporto. In a way to maintain a signature of an architect, Carlos Ramos, along with the memory of the innovating structures of the sixties I studied what was the best use in the concept of the University City. Therefore I try to provide new habits for the area more related with the people that nowadays live in the vicinity out of the appropriation of the maternity assemblies. This document allows the comprehension of the appearance as well as the development of the building Maternity and question what is it future, creating an alternative way for the demolition of patrimony that is not yet recognized.
