The aim of the present research is to analyze how the existence of children (biological or stepchildren) influences the perception of conjugality (conjugal adjustment and functioning). We also intend to study some sociodemographic variables (age, gender, qualifications, marital status) and a family variable (family life cycle) that can function as moderators. For that purpose, we used the Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Supplemental Data, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and the Enriching & Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication & Happiness (ENRICH). We compared two subsamples: spouses with biological children (n=38) and spouses with stepchildren (n=38), belonging to a convenience sample (N=76). In conjugal adjustment (as measured with DAS), the results indicate that the existence of children, be it biological or stepchildren, doesn’t influence the perception of global conjugal adjustment (as measured with DAS) and, generally, the conjugal functioning (as measured with ENRICH). Only the results in the dimensions of aspects of personality, conflict resolution, financial management and children and marriage proved to be influenced by the existence of children, whilst spouses with stepchildren were those who obtained lower results, indicators of larger difficulties on these dimensions. Regarding the possible moderating variables, none of the considered variables (age, gender, qualifications, marital status and stage of family life cycle) has shown influence on the perception of the conjugal adjustment. When observing conjugal functioning, the qualification has an impact in the dimension of role equality, especially visible when comparing spouses with ninth grade and a university degree, being these last who obtained the highest results, in more detail, were those who showed more equitable values according to the role of man and woman in the relationship. In both cases, the spouses with stepchildren were those who obtained higher results, which reflects a less traditional and conservative attitude. The present research allows therapists and interventionists in general to understand a little more about the reality of these new forms of family, helping them to think and act in clinical practice in a more structured and reasoned way. |
