The study field of learning disabilities (LD) has been developing extraordinarily since 1963, when Samuel Kirk used, for the first time, the expression ‘learning disabilities’. In spite of the made progress, we are still involved in an entangled of definitions, classifications and etiological factors depending on the theoretical perspective of the authors. As far as Portugal is concerned, there is still a long way ahead for a more complete understanding of this issue. However, it is consensual that for such, it is necessary a multidisciplinary participation and intervention which will allow describing, explaining and treating the evident complexity of LD better. With this study, we intended to contribute to the subject, and understand in what way this issue is viewed by professionals who deal with it more directly, more specifically, their opinion in relation to the identification criteria of LD, on their use of the term, and their use of the ICF-CY within this theme. The sample consisted of 140 individuals, of both genders, aged between 23 and 62 years old, who constituted three sample groups according to their profession: regular education teachers, special education teachers and psychologists. All participants answered a survey deliberately elaborated for the present investigation. The results indicate that the different sample groups agree with the traditional criteria of identifying LD; however they reveal not to know the most recently approved criterion of response to intervention (RTI) yet. All three groups agree that in Portugal, the term learning disabilities is used in a very broad way, covering all of the existent learning problems in schools. Professionals are also unanimous when affirming that the support to the students is necessary, but that in Portugal the same is scarce. In what concerns the use of the ICF-CY, it was shown that the regular education teachers are the ones who use this tool the least, while special education teachers are those who use it the most. In general, a group of professionals, consisting mostly of special education specialists made a positive evaluation of the use of the ICF-CY in the context of LD. Nevertheless, some individuals claim the lack of training received on the tool as an excuse not to use it. Comparisons among the three sample groups show that psychologists have more restrictive conceptions regarding the etiology of LD and the coverage in the usage of the term.pt
