XI ABSTRACT Objective: The selection of young gymnasts in adolescence is seen as a critical period, caused by the large morphological and structural changes observed in this young stage of its development and until they reach adulthood. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the morphological and functional profile of a group of gymnasts aerobics and compares it with the school population in the same age group. Methods: We evaluated 16 gymnasts from Academy CantanhedeGym, 9 of which belong to the Portugal National Team from Aerobic Gymnastic, 7 gymnasts at local / regional and a group of young people belonging to the group of schools Marques Marialva in Cantanhede n = 40, aged 12 to 14 years. The gymnasts were evaluated in the morphological variables : body weight, height, sitting height, subcutaneous skin folds and somatic information necessary to determine the somatotype, maturation through the percentage of mature height and maturity offset. In functional variables was applied to test battery of physical assessment specific to Aerobics (Regulation from National Team & High Performance - FGP - 2011/2012). Results: The analysis of the comparison group of gymnasts, with the group of no-gymnasts using a parametric statistical inference and using the T Student test on the external morphology, the variable addition of subcutaneous skin folds and somatotype, the component of the endomorphism, shows statistically significant differences (p <0,05). In somatic maturation, the group of no-gymnasts have a percentage of predicted mature height greater (94.4%). The values of functional variables, physical abilities, demonstrate that the group of gymnasts is higher in tests of strength, endurance and flexibility. When the analysis is associated with the comparison between the group of elite gymnasts and local gymnasts using the nonparametric Man-Whitney test, surface morphology, the somatotype components and somatic maturation values are not statistically significant. In functional variables, tests of strength (arm flexion, stradel) and the flexibility test (vertical splits, right) values are highly significant (p <0:01). In the variables, specific physical quality, the data show values exist very significant (p <0.01), in most tests. Conclusions: Aerobic Gymnastics gymnasts are characterized by short stature, reduced sitting height, lower body weight and lower percentage of body fat, with a profile of ecto-mesomorphic somatotype, also presenting growth later. A functional level, gymnasts are characterized by having high degrees of strength and greater levels of flexibility, where the great neuro-muscular coordination and strength are predominant features. Gymnasts of the Elite (National Team) from Aerobic Gimnastic also showed lower weight, a lower percentage of subcutaneous fat, somatotype with the type endomorph-ectomorph, and with physical and technical implementation levels much higher than the local gymnasts.por
