Marshy wetlands are habitats with high productivity and ensure important ecological services. They support bird communities that include species with high conservation value and that are heavily depends on these habitats particularly insectivorous birds. Despite all the benefits of these habitats, in the past they were considered marginal lands that should be drained for human activities, leading to the appearance of reedbeds with riverine characteristics. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the importance of the reedbeds in Central Portugal for the populations of Cetti's Warbler Cettia cetti, as well as to evaluate the use of two distinct habitats and understand the importance of food quality during periods of high energy outlay for resident insectivorous bird species. We assessed the population structure of Cetti's Warbler in a reedbed habitat and in a riparian habitat, based on a long-term dataset (10 years) from scientific bird ringing, as well as productivity of this species in each habitat and body condition of the birds in different periods of their annual life cycle. We also assessed the diet selection of this species by analyzing droppings and arthropod availability in the two habitats using pitfall traps and sticky strips. We were also evaluated temperature in the two habitats using data loggers. The differences between the populations of Cetti's Warbler occurred mainly in the periods of moult and autumn with an obvious increase of the population in reedbeds. Moreover, at this location the birds had a better body condition. This may be due to the fact that this habitat offers better conditions of shelter and also to the fact that prey selected by Cettis’s Warbler (Coleoptera and Araneae) had a greater biomass in the reedbed habitat during the moult and Autumn periods . We concluded that both habitats are necessary for the survival of this bird species, the riparian habitat to breed and reedbed habitat to spend the moult and autumn periods.
