The present study aims to analyse what extent the existence of children influence in the perception of marital relationship, particularly in terms of adjustment and marital functioning. We also consider variables such as the stage of the couple life cycle, place of residence and level of qualifications, which we believe could serve as moderator variables. For this study we used the Mutual Adjustment Scale (MAS) and the Scale of Marriage Enrichment and Development, Communication and Happiness (ENRICH). By comparing two subsamples, childless spouses (n= 84) and spouses with one or more children (n=84), we underline the influence of the presence of children in the decreased perception of mutual satisfaction, as assessed by the MAS, the greater acceptance of the characteristics of the partner and the greater perception of satisfaction, as the definition of the ENRICH. Variables such as the stage of the couple life cycle and qualifications played an important role in the influence on the variability of results were considered statistically significant. This study aims to encourage new perspectives and conclusions on the study of couples without children, driving the need for new studies that differentiate option for childless and couples with infertility.
