Quando a mania do amor oscila com a depressão: impacto da Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar na relação de casal

Abstract

O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal analisar em que medida o diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar num dos cônjuges afeta a perceção do ajustamento e funcionamento conjugal. Pretendemos também atender a algumas variáveis sócio-demográficas (sexo), familiares e conjugais (etapa do ciclo vital familiar e duração da relação conjugal), bem como específicas da doença (tipo de tratamento) que podem funcionar como mediadoras. Sessenta indivíduos portugueses (N=60), casados ou em união de facto, divididos em duas sub-amostras: cônjuges com diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar (n=30) e cônjuges pertencentes à população geral (n=30), responderam à Escala de Ajustamento Mútuo (EAM; Lourenço & Relvas, 2003) e à Escala de Enriquecimento e Desenvolvimento Conjugal, Comunicação e Felicidade (ENRICH; Lourenço & Relvas, 2003). A informação foi complementada com o preenchimento do Questionário de Dados Sócio-demográficos e de Dados Complementares, e de um Questionário de Dados Específicos. Efetuadas as respetivas análises estatísticas, os resultados apontam para a existência de uma relação entre o diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar e alguns fatores de conjugalidade. Quanto à interação diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar/variáveis mediadoras, as interações diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar/duração da relação conjugal, diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar/etapa do ciclo vital familiar e diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar/tipo de tratamento, exercem influência na forma como os cônjuges percecionam o ajustamento e funcionamento conjugal. Além de poder impulsionar novos estudos, esta investigação fornece informação importante que pode ajudar terapeutas e outros interventores no apoio a prestar a famílias e casais onde existe um diagnóstico de Perturbação Afetiva Bipolar. The present study aims to investigate the extent to which diagnosis of Bipolar Affective Disorder in a spouse influences the perception of adjustment and marital functioning. We also intend to attend another socio-demographic (gender), family and marital (stage of family life cycle and duration of marital relationship), as well as disease-specific (type of treatment) variables that can act as mediators. Sixty portuguese individuals (N = 60), married or in cohabitation, divided into two sub-samples: spouses diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder (n = 30) and spouses belonging to the general population (n = 30) responded to the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS; Lourenço & Relvas, 2003) and the Enriching & Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication & Happiness Scale (ENRICH; Lourenço & Relvas, 2003). The information collected was supplemented by completing the sociodemographic questionnaire and additional data inquiries, as well as specific questionnaire. After the statistical analysis, the results point to the existence of a relationship between a diagnosis of Bipolar Affective Disorder and conjugal factors. As the interaction Bipolar Affective Disorder / mediating variables, the interaction Bipolar Affective Disorder diagnosis / duration of the marriage relationship, Bipolar Affective Disorder diagnosis / stage of lifecycle and diagnosis of Bipolar Affective Disorder / type of treatment influence the perception of adjustment and marital functioning. Besides being able to drive new studies, this research provides important information that can help therapists and other experts in assisting families and couples with a diagnosis of Bipolar Affective Disorder.
