Da timidez à fobia social

Abstract

A fobia social é classificada como um distúrbio de ansiedade que reflecte medo de interacção e desempenho social. A timidez, um termo bastante utilizado pela população em geral, é utilizada para situações bastante diversas. Serão estes dois conceitos semelhantes e sobreponíveis ou serão duas entidades distintas com características específicas? Relativamente à fobia social é realizada uma revisão dos diferentes critérios de diagnóstico, factores etiológicos ambientais e biológicos e dados epidemiológicos com diferenças na incidência e prevalência consoante a idade, género e o país de origem, com as naturais particularidades dependendo da cultura em que se inserem os estudos realizados. Considerando as características clínicas, são descritos os sintomas somáticos, manifestações cognitivas e alterações de comportamento características mas que por vezes se confundem com a existência de comorbilidade. Diferentes opções de tratamento são aqui referidas e há uma reflexão sobre o impacto da fobia social na sociedade e, particularmente, na economia.

Social phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder that reflects fear of social interaction and performance. Shyness, a term widely used by the general population, is well-worn for very different situations. Are these two similar and overlapping concepts or are they two separate entities with specific characteristics? This is a review article about social phobia and its different diagnostic criteria, environmental and biological aetiological factors and epidemiological data on differences in incidence and prevalence by age, gender and country of origin, with natural features based on the culture to which the samples are related. Though this review and considering the clinical features during this article are described somatic symptoms, cognitive aspects and behavioral characteristics but these can be mistaken with comorbid disorders. Different treatment options are mentioned and there is also a reflection on the impact of social phobia in society and particularly in the economy.
