As bibliotecas universitárias face ao desafio do Google Scholar: ameaça ou oportunidade?

Abstract

Novos desafios se colocam a todos os sectores da sociedade, em virtude das grandes transformações resultantes da evolução das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). As bibliotecas, neste contexto, não são excepção. Esta nova realidade apresenta-se como uma ameaça e, simultaneamente, como uma oportunidade que as bibliotecas e os bibliotecários não poderão desperdiçar. O Google Scholar encontra-se entre os desafios que o bibliotecário terá de enfrentar. Esta nova ferramenta de pesquisa, desenvolvida nos “laboratórios” do gigante tecnológico Google, causou, desde logo, alguma apreensão no seio da comunidade biblioteconómica. Os mais pessimistas, temiam perder o papel que desempenhavam enquanto intermediários entre a informação e aquele que a procura. Temiam tornar-se inúteis face à propagação de ferramentas como o Google Scholar. Determinar se o Google Scholar representa uma ameaça à sobrevivência dos bibliotecários do Ensino Superior, ou se representa uma oportunidade para assumirem novos papéis e reescrever o seu destino profissional, é a questão central que este trabalho se propõe responder. Para responder a esta questão, torna-se indispensável percorrer a literatura académica, mais recente, sobre esta matéria, bem como, efectuar uma análise descritiva do Google Scholar e uma análise comparativa com os produtos concorrentes. O comparativo com outras bases de dados académicas, como o Scirus ou a Web of Science, é inevitável, não só para determinar os seus pontos fracos, mas também, os seus pontos fortes. O bibliotecário competente terá, por certo, a capacidade para fazer uso, em seu benefício, das potencialidades e das fragilidades identificadas no Google Scholar. Face ao panorama actual das instituições de ensino superior e da investigação científica, ferramentas como esta, representam uma oportunidade para o bibliotecário reafirmar o seu papel e a sua centralidade no seio da comunidade académica.

New challenges are faced by all sectors of society, given the major changes resulting from developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The libraries in this context are no exception. This new reality presents itself as a threat and, simultaneously, as an opportunity that libraries and librarians can not miss. Google Scholar is one of the challenges that will face the librarian. This new research tool, developed in the "laboratories" of the giant Google, caused, at the beginning, some apprehension in the librarianship community. The pessimists feared losing the role they play as intermediaries between the information and that demand. They feared becoming useless with the spread of tools like Google Scholar. Determine if Google Scholar is a threat to the survival of librarians in higher education, or whether it represents an opportunity to take on new roles and rewrite their destiny, is the central question that this work intends to answer. To answer this question, it is essential to go through the most recent academic literature on this subject, as well as perform a descriptive analysis of Google Scholar and a comparison with competing products. The comparison with other academic databases like Scirus or Web of Science, is inevitable, not only to determine its weaknesses but also his strengths. The competent librarian will have the ability to make use, for his benefit, of the potential and weaknesses identified in Google Scholar. Given the current landscape of higher education institutions and scientific research, tools such as this one represent an opportunity to the librarian reaffirm its central role within the academic community.
