A construção da finitude na transição do século XX para o século XXI : contributo para o estudo do caso português

Abstract

Com a dissertação A Construção da finitude na transição do século XX para o século XXI: contributo para o estudo do caso português procurou-se abordar as atitudes humanas na sua relação, mais ou menos directa, com a morte. O objectivo foi analisar estas atitudes na transição do século XX para o século XXI, mas sem esquecer o horizonte da história, permitindo, assim, distintas comparações e oposições. Espacialmente restringimo-nos ao Ocidente, com especial ênfase para o caso português. Dada a ligação estreita entre velhice e morte, tecemos algumas considerações sobre o idoso e os cuidados paliativos. Sendo a eutanásia um tema cada vez mais presente nas sociedades modernas Ocidentais, não poderíamos deixar de a referir, não olvidando o Direito português. Verificando que, neste contexto, também o destino a dar ao corpo morto se tem vindo a alterar, abordámos a temática da cremação em Portugal, desde o século XX. A nossa referência, ainda que breve, à tanatopraxia, prendeu-se com o facto de, na presente época, existir uma tendência a ocultar a morte. Finalmente, chegámos ao Panteão Nacional, que nos mostra a importância da preservação da memória dos mortos da Pátria.

The present thesis On the construction of the finite in the transition from the 20th to the 21st centuries: contribution to the study of the Portuguese situation sought to describe human attitudes towards death and dying. The aim was to analyze those attitudes in the transition from the 20th century to the 21st century, while considering a historical timeline that serves as a backdrop for a myriad of comparisons and antitheses. Geographically, we restricted our analysis to the West, emphasizing the Portuguese reality. Considering the close relationship between old age and death, we also touched on the issue of the elderly and palliative care. Euthanasia, too, was discussed herein, especially in the context of Portuguese Law, due to its relevance as a topic of debate in modern western societies. Furthermore, as the handling of the dead body has evolved through time, we analysed cremation practices in Portugal, since the 20th century. We briefly approached the issue of thanatopraxy, as a reflexion of the tendency to conceal death in western societies. Finally, we arrived at the Portuguese Pantheon, a manifestation of the importance of the preservation of the memory of the nation’s deceased.
