Estácio da Veiga e os primórdios da Antropologia Física

Abstract

Após o reconhecimento da existência de fósseis humanos nas primeiras décadas do século XIX, com diversos achados no continente Europeu, em Portugal começavam, também, os estudos antropológicos com a discussão da antiguidade humana e da ocupação pré-histórica em território nacional. Na época dominavam as análises craniométricas, com grande in uência da escola francesa, designadamente sobre a morfologia das “raças” humanas. Este é o enquadramento teórico para a investigação em paleoethnologia de Estácio da Veiga que usufruiu da colaboração do médico Francisco Ferraz de Macedo, pioneiro da antropologia portuguesa. O trabalho de Estácio da Veiga retrata o conhecimento nos primórdios da antropologia física complementado com a sua visão crítica e interdisciplinar. Não esgotando os temas antropológicos retratados pelo investigador, o presente trabalho representa um subsídio para a interpretação dos habitantes das Antiguidades Monumentaes do Algarve.

After the recognition of human fossils in the rst decades of the 19th century, with several discoveries in Europe, Portugal also started the discussion about human antiquity and prehistoric occupation of the Portuguese territory. At that time prevailed the craniometric analysis mainly related to “races” morphology, with a great in uence of the French school. This was the theoretical background of Estácio da Veiga research on paleoethnology. In the study of the human skulls recovered during the elaboration of the archaeological map of the Algarve, Estácio da Veiga counted with the collaboration of Ferraz de Macedo. The work of Estácio da Veiga portraits the knowledge at the beginnings of physical anthropology complemented by his strong critical and interdisciplinary vision.
