Introduction: In the last years it has been a great development in the technology field. Despite the positive effects these technologies might bring, such as more rapid communication and higher efficiency we can not ignore the negatives effects such as muscular skeletal injury. In order to diminish these consequences one way was the introduction of active pauses during the work time. The active pauses can have a positive effect toward the discomfort and tiredness that a person feels during the working day and might lead to the improvement of their work. Objectives: This study had the main purpose to investigate the effect of stretching exercises during breaks at work as concerning the levels of muscular activity of the erect spinal muscle and trapezium muscle, when carrying out a task of continuously typing during two hours and fifty minutes and compare this activity with the implementation of stretching pauses with that of passive pauses. Methodology: The sample consisted of 10 people, five males and five females, aged between 26 e 35 years. The study consisted of typing a text during 2 hours and 50 minutes with 10 minutes of interval at the end of each hour. The participant were divided into two groups, the first group held the stretching at the end of the first hour, and the second group held the exercises at the end of the second hour. Regarding neuromuscular activity the values of the percentage of Mean Square Root Signal (RMS) relatively to maximal contraction and the Mean Power Frequency (MPF) in the erect spinal muscle and trapezium muscle were analysed, between 0 – 5 minutes, 20 – 25 minutes and 45 – 50 minutes of each hour and the average values of RMS and MPF for the total hours. Results: The results indicate that the active breaks were significantly reducing (p ≤, 005) the values of RMS and MPF. Conclusion: The implementation of active pauses revealed less fatigue in the muscle independently if the stretching was made at the end of the first hour or at the end of the second hour. We can conclude that the active pauses are useful, and they might be an important aid in the prevention of muscular fatigue in low tension generating tasks such as working with computers. |
