This thesis comes to light from a protocol established between the ADAI (Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics) and the General Library of the University of Coimbra, with the aim of analyzing the hygrothermal conditions (characterized by particular values of relative humidity and temperature) found in the Joanina Library of the University of Coimbra. During the last decade, the environmental conditions of facilities for the accommodation of bibliographical material have been a crucial factor for the preservation of said material. Pollution, humidity, temperature and lighting can possibly deteriorate or even destroy the literature assets that are maintained within libraries. Therefore the objective of this thesis is to analyze and evaluate the hygrothermal conditions on the Joanina Library, devoid of air conditioning systems. In July, began a study of hygrothermal control to the vault of the General Library. Through the analysis of temperature and relative humidity will be possible to evaluate the performance that the studied building has for the preservation of library collections. To collect data hygrothermal aging sensor were used, so that measurements of temperature and relative humidity were perfomed over a given period of time. Data processing was carried out by using mathematical formulas, computer software (KaleidaGraph and Excel) and, together with the observation of existing conditions at each site, through visits, it was possible to make a comprehensive assessment of the conditions of the building. The work developed here seeks to highlight the importance of monitoring the hygrothermal conditions within the building and preservation of collections. At the end of the study is possible to assume a stable hygrothermal environment within the noble floor of the Library Joanina, despite the direct connection between the external environment and the environment within the building. This is justified by the conditions of the building processes applied to the construction of the library. Some suggestions for the improvement of the preservation and conservation conditions on a short term are listed. |
