Aim: To examine the effect of morphology, echocardiographic parameters, maturity assessed using more than a methodology and quantity of practice, in the aerobic performance and aerobic fitness of young hockey players. Methodology: The sample included 63 male roller-skate hockey players (32 of elite and 31 of local level) with 14-16 years of age. Morphological variables (weight, height, sitting height, subcutaneous skinfolds and somatic information necessary to determine the somatotype), echocardiographic variables (cardiac dimension structure parameters to determine the left ventricular mass and relative end-diastolic wall thickness), maturity (stage of pubic hair assessed at clinical examination, maturity offset, percentage of predicted mature height and skeletal maturity using the Fels method), quantity of annual practice (training and playing minutes) and sportive experience (years of federate practice). The PACER was used in the evaluation of aerobic performance and the determination of the aerobic power was obtained through a direct, maximal and progressive treadmill exercise test. Data analysis considered descriptive statistic. ANOVA was used to test the effect of the sexual maturity, completed by ANCOVA’s controlling for the spurious effect of the chronological age. Additionally, the ANOVA was used to check the effect of the skeletal maturity as significant cause of morphological, sportive preparation and aerobic measures variation. The discriminant function analysis was used to find a limited set of variables, able to re-classify the hockey players in the original groups. Multiple regressions (backward method) were used to identify the correlate variables able to explain the variation of the results in each one of the aerobic measures. The level of significance was maintained in 5%. Results: All subjects are in stage 4 and 5 of pubic hair. The analysis of variance, effectuated for the categories, that includes the biological maturity status (delayed, on time and early) given by the difference between the skeletal age and the chronological age, classifies more subjects early mature (32%) than on time (30%) or late mature (14%), pointing to statistically significant differences for the body mass (p<0.05), sit to height índex (p<0.05) and absolute aerobic power (p<0.01), what take place in a gradient of early>on time>late. The elite hockey players have more years of sportive practice (p<0.01), more minutes of game (p<0.05), they reached the PHV in stature more early (p<0.05), they are taller (sitting height, p<0.05), with less subcutaneous fat (p<0.05), with a larger diameter of the aortic root (p<0.01), with a bigger aerobic performance capacity (p<0.01) but with less aerobic fitness (p<0.01), than their peers of local level. The discriminating function used, identified the years of sportive practice, followed from the aerobic power relative to body mass and aerobic endurance, as the best markers to distinguish the athletes of elite from the ones of local level. The discriminating function reclassifies correctly 87% of the sample. The ratio skeletal age/chronological age (SA/CA), the body surface area and the left ventricular mass índex, explain 52% of the variation of the absolute aerobic power. The adiposity, the ratio SA/CA, the body surface area and the years of practice, explain 30% of the variation of the aerobic power relative to body mass. The adiposity, sexual maturity and the percentage of predicted mature height, explain 37% of the variation in the aerobic endurance. Conclusions: The elite hockey players stand out of their peers of local level in the state of growth, cardiac structure, maturity status, sportive preparation and aerobic measures. It seems that the process of sportive selection benefits body size and advanced athletes in maturity status. Morphology, cardiac dimensions, maturity status and sportive experience affect the aerobic measures. The maturity and the adiposity are the most contributive variables to the aerobic performance. The maturity, body surface area, left ventricular structure and the sportive experience are the most contributive variables to the aerobic fitness.-
