A Qualitative Study Following the Clinical Trial on the Efficacy of the PSYCHOPATHY.COMP - Experience with the Juvenile Justice System and in the Juvenile Detention Facility

Abstract

Juvenile detainees represent one of the most complex and extensively traumatized populations. However, there’s a scarcity of studies that have focused on the perceptions of this group regarding their experiences. To overcome this gap in literature, this study aims to analyze, through a qualitative design, the perspective of a group that participated in the clinical trial testing the efficacy of PSYCHOPATHY.COMP (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03971682), regarding the specific period between the first contact with the justice system and their experience in the juvenile detention facility, integrating the sessions of the program PSYCHOPATHY.COMP. Participants were selected from the treatment (n=8) group and assessed through a semi-structured interview. Transcribed verbatim data from interviews was analyzed following an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. In the period from the first contact with the juvenile justice system and until detention participants described experiences of warmth and affection, contact with their lawyers as a positive experience, experiences of abuse regarding law enforcement, early age drug abuse, feelings of self-blame and lack of support. In the juvenile detention facility participants described both experiences of warmth and affection and experiences of abuse, while detailing feelings of self-blame and freedom deprivation. In the experience with the program PSYCHOPATHY.COMP participants described the therapeutic relationship established and the use of mindfulness as a way of managing impulsivity. Lastly, they described what participating in the program changed in their perception of their life pathways. This study’s findings impact juvenile justice policies and raise awareness on the importance of offering evidence-based interventions to this at-risk population.

Jovens detidos representam uma das populações mais complexa e traumatizada. Contudo, há uma escassez de estudos focados na perceção deste grupo relativamente às suas experiências. Para preencher esta lacuna na literatura, este estudo objetiva analisar, através de uma metodologia qualitativa, a perspetiva de um grupo que participou no ensaio clínico que estudou a eficácia do programa PSYCHOPATHY.COMP (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03971682), relativamente ao período entre o primeiro contacto com o sistema de justiça juvenil e a saída do centro educativo, integrando as sessões do programa. Os participantes foram selecionados do grupo de tratamento (n=8) e avaliados através de uma entrevista semi-estruturada. Os dados transcritos foram analisados seguindo uma Análise Fenomenológica Interpretativa. No período entre o primeiro contacto com o sistema de justiça juvenil e até à detenção os participantes descreveram experiências de calor e afeto, o contacto com advogados como positivo, experiências de abuso com forças policiais, consumo de drogas numa idade precoce, sentimentos de culpa e falta de suporte. No centro educativo descreveram tanto experiências de calor e afeto como de abuso, detalhando sentimentos de culpa e privação de liberdade. Na experiência com o PSYCHOPATHY.COMP descreveram a relação terapêutica e o uso de técnicas de mindfulness como forma de gerir a impulsividade. Por fim, descreveram como a participação no programa mudou a perceção que tinham das suas trajetórias de vida. Os resultados deste estudo impactam as políticas do sistema de justiça juvenil e promovem a consciencialização face à importância de oferecer intervenções baseadas em evidência a esta população em risco.
