dc.description.abstract | This dissertation focuses on the adaptation and validation of the Edinburgh Social Cognition Test (ESCoT) for use in the context of awake brain surgery (ABS), aiming to assess cognitive and social skills while preserving critical brain functions. The methodology used here involved creating a virtual reality (VR) environment where an adaptation of the ESCoT, a paper-and-pencil test that evaluates cognitive and affective ToM, understanding of social norms at the interpersonal level, and understanding of social norms at the intrapersonal level, was implemented with videos of realistic situations. This approach aims to allow the assessment of social cognition with greater ecological validity, aiding in the identification and preservation of eloquent brain areas. A validation of the VR version – the CogMap-SC – was conducted with healthy participants. Participants performed both the CogMap-SC and the ESCoT in a counterbalanced manner to minimize practice effects. Both tools had good internal consistency. Participants scored higher on the CogMap-SC, which can be attributed to the simplification of responses in the VR version. This difference between versions was not statistically significant. The conclusions highlight the potential of CogMap-SC in improving AC procedures, ensuring that important social cognitive functions are monitored and preserved, thereby improving patients' outcomes and quality of life post-surgery. This research contributes with tools that may incorporate specific social cognition assessments within clinical neuropsychology, especially in neurosurgical contexts where preserving cognitive functions can significantly impact patient recovery and well-being. | eng |
