It is important to understand whether psychological attributes, states and processes that have been associated with eating disorders, such as Perfectionism, Body Image Concern, Self-Compassion and Affection, mainly in studies with samples of young women, retain their role as predictors of severity in older people and in both genders. For this to be analyzed, it is necessary to have questionnaires assessing these variables with good psychometric properties in these groups. Objective: 1. analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Body Image Concern Inventory/BICI in a sample of adults from the general population; 2. analyze the influence of gender and age on the relationship between Perfectionism, Body Image Concern, Self-Compassion and Eating Psychopathology.Materials and Methods: 809 individuals from the general population (242 men and 567 women), with a mean age of 31.41 years (±14.361; range: 18-74), completed an online survey that included the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire/EDE-Q7, the Screen for Disordered Eating/SDE, the Muscle Dysmorphia Subscale of the Eating Disorder Assessment for Men/DM- EDAM, the BIG-3 Perfectionism Scale/BIG3-16, the Body Image Concern Inventory/BICI, the Self-Compassion Scale/SCS-12 and the Profile of Mood States/PoMS-12.Results: The confirmatory factor analysis of the BICI revealed good fit indices for the 2nd order model with two factors, dysmorphic symptoms and symptom interference (X²/gl=4.9867; CFI=.9539; GFI=.9115; TLI =.9441; RMSEA=.0702, p<.001); Cronbach's alpha coefficients were .959 (total) and >.80 (dimensional). The Body Image Concern variables correlated significantly and positively, with moderate to high magnitude, with those of Eating Pathology, Perfectionism, Affect and Self-Compassion, and all of these correlated with each other. The average scores for females and younger age groups were higher for all the variables, with the exception of DM-EDAM (higher in men) and the Restrictive Diet dimension of the EDEQ-7. Even controlling statistically for gender, age and negative affect, there was partial mediation of (reduced) Self-Compassion and Body Image Concern in the relationship between Perfectionism and Eating Psychopathology (assessed with the EDS and MD); in the model with the EDEQ-7 as the dependent variable, mediation was total. Conclusion: Regardless of age, gender and affect, Perfectionism is a predictor of Eating Psychopathology and Self-Compassion and Body Image Concern, alone and in sequence, are mediators of the effect of the former. Since there is evidence that Self-Compassion can be improved, this emotional regulation strategy could be useful in reducing the negative impact of Perfectionism and Body Image Concern on Eating Psychopathology. |
