PATRIMÓNIO INDUSTRIAL EM CONTEXTO URBANO: A FÁBRICA DE ALCATIFAS DA LOUSÃ

Abstract

Awareness regarding industrial architecture preservation emerged in the mid-20th century as a response to deindustrialization and dismantling of important testimonies. Although this movement manifested itself belatedly in Portugal, organizations such as the Portuguese Association for Industrial Heritage (APPI) have been working to its protection and cultural recognition.Research and cataloging serve a fundamental role in preserving the country's industrial history. As such, this is the contribution sought through the study of Lousa’s Carpet Factory’s legacy, which had a strong social and economic impact in its area. Despite the presence of cultural and heritage values, as they are not officially classified, the buildings comprising the Factory are even more susceptible to fortuitous modifications and, consequently, discharacterization.To the example of the Factory is added the particular challenge of being located in an urban context, specifically within the historical center of the municipality. Its current situation of abandonment raises the following question: how to ensure that the currently unused spaces of the factory relate and reintegrate with its urban surroundings in order to ensure the continuity of its existence?To address this, it is necessary to implement integrated urban planning. As such, the adaptive rehabilitation of the Factory's spaces through the selection of new uses that meet the demands and specific needs of the community while also recalling the history that took place there is crucial. This work aims to contribute to the definition of an intervention strategy based on the recovery of memory, architectural characterization, the study of its potential, and the exploratory presentation of a reuse proposal.The Lousã's Carpets Factory represents a significant legacy within Portugal's industrial memory, attributed to its dimension, social and economic importance, as well as its location and urban influence, which must be preserved as a living testament to this memory from an integrated and sustainable perspective.

A conscientização a respeito da preservação da arquitetura industrial surgiu em meados do século XX como resposta à desindustrialização e ao desmantelamento de importantes testemunhos. Em Portugal, embora esse movimento se tenha mostrado de maneira tardia, organizações como a Associação Portuguesa para o Património Industrial (APPI) têm contribuído para sua proteção e reconhecimento cultural. A investigação e catalogação desempenham um papel fundamental na preservação da história industrial do país e é a contribuição que se busca com o estudo do legado da Fábrica de Alcatifas, localizada no município da Lousã, testemunho do significativo impacto social e económico. Apesar da presença de valores culturais e patrimoniais, por serem não classificados oficialmente, os edifícios que compõem a Fábrica mostram-se ainda mais suscetíveis a demolição e, consequentemente, a descaracterização. Ao exemplar da Fábrica se acrescenta o desafio particular de estar situada em contexto urbano, mais especificamente no centro histórico do município. A sua situação de atual abandono, verificada em tantos outros relevantes complexos de edifícios industriais, levanta a seguinte questão: como assegurar que os espaços atualmente inutilizados da Fábrica se relacionem e se reintegrem com o seu entorno urbano de forma a garantir a continuidade de sua existência? Para responder este desafio será necessário implementar um planejamento urbano integrado. Isso implica na reabilitação adaptativa dos espaços da Fábrica a partir da seleção de novos usos que atendam às demandas e necessidades específicas da comunidade e, ao mesmo tempo, rememorem a história que ali aconteceu. Este trabalho pretende constituir um contributo para a definição de uma estratégia de intervenção a partir da recuperação da memória, caracterização arquitetónica, estudo da sua potencialidade e apresentação, de forma exploratória, de uma proposta de reuso. A Fábrica de Alcatifas da Lousã representa um legado de grande importância no contexto da memória industrial em Portugal, quer pela sua dimensão, quer pela importância social e económica que teve, quer ainda pela sua localização e impacto urbano, que importa preservar como testemunho vivo desta memória numa perspectiva integrada e sustentável.
