(Re)uso do Património Histórico. Valorização, Reabilitação e Conservação do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz e área urbana envolvente

Abstract

As part of the 2019/2020 Architecture Research Seminar, the theme proposed was: Project for the Enhancement, Rehabilitation and Conservation of the Santa Cruz Monastery and the surrounding urban area, where the focus of this document starts from the conversion of uses of the building in a museological program and consequent requalification of the surrounding urban area. In that sense, the project was initially developed in group during the first semester of the Project Atelier II course and subsequently continued on an individual basis. The subject matter is aligned with the “Building in the built”, wich is essential to clarify certain terminologies and criteria to be considered in the act of rehabilitation. The object to intervene is the Santa Cruz Monastery, located in the heart of the city of Coimbra, surrounded by buildings of great heritage value, specifically located along Sofia street. This monastery has been one of the main religious houses in Portugal, having undergone several reforms since its foundation until the present day. The purpose of this document is to enhance the monastic complex by introducing a new architectural element added to the existing structure, along with cultural and educational programs, complemented by green spaces for leisure. In this sense, the methodology to follow involves not forgetting the need for an interpretive and critical perspective on the surrounding urban area, wich, like the building itself, has been undergone seve- ral changes over time, leading to the mischaracterization of the monastic complex and the entire downtown area of Coimbra. It´s also essential to obtain a detailed knowledge of the historical aspects related to the building and its consequent reforms from its foundation to the present day. One of the most significant aspects is the Renaissance period, wich motivated the construction of the Manga cloister, wich is completely uncharacterized and detached from its original seclusion context. Throughout this investigation, concepts such as: memory of the place and the object, history, historical heritage and location, were key definitions of an important approach so that the interventional solution results in a harmonious and balanced intervention that respects the existent building.In conclusion, the intention is to promote the preservation of the monastic complex so that it remains active in the daily life of society and so that it continues to be regarded and remembered as a historical landmark of the city of Coimbra.

No âmbito do seminário de Investigação em Arquitetura do ano de 2019/2020, propõe-se o tema: Projeto de Valorização, Reabilitação e Conservação do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz e área urbana envolvente, onde o foco do presente documento parte da reconversão de usos do edifício num programa museológico e consequentemente promover a requalificação da malha urbana envolvente. Nesse sentido, o projeto desenvolveu-se primeiramente em grupo no primeiro semestre da disciplina de Atelier de Projeto II e posteriormente desenvolvida de forma individual. O tema insere-se na temática Construir no Construído, pelo que se torna imprescindível o esclarecimento de certas terminologias e critérios a ter em consideração no ato de reabilitar.O objeto a intervir é o Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, situado no coração da baixa da cidade de Coimbra, rodeado de edifícios de grande valor patrimonial, mais precisamente situados ao longo da rua da Sofia. Este, foi uma das principais casas religiosas a nível nacional, tendo sofrido diversas reformas desde a sua fundação até à atualidade. Pretende-se com este documento, a valorização do conjunto com a necessidade da introdução de um novo corpo arquitetónico agregado à preexistência, programas culturais e de aprendizagem articulados por espaços verdes e de permanência. Neste sentido, a metodologia a seguir passa por não esquecer a necessidade de existir um olhar interpretativo e crítico sobre a área urbana em que se insere que, tal como o próprio edifício, sofreu várias alterações ao longo do tempo, levando à descaracterização do conjunto monástico e de toda a área da Baixa Coimbrã. Torna-se também imprescindível obter um conhecimento detalhado de toda a componente histórica que envolve o edifício e as suas consequentes reformas desde a sua fundação até aos dias de hoje. Um dos aspetos importantes, prende-se com a época do Renascimento que motiva a construção do Claustro da Manga e que se encontra atualmente completamente descaracterizado e fora do seu contexto original de clausura. Ao longo desta investigação, conceitos como: memória do lugar e do objeto, história, Património Histórico e lugar foram definições-chave de importante abordagem para que a solução interventiva pudesse resultar numa proposta harmoniosa e equilibrada, respeitando a preexistência do Mosteiro. Em suma, pretende-se promover a preservação do conjunto monástico de forma a que permaneça na vida ativa ativo na vida quotidiana da sociedade, e para que continue a ser considerado e relembrado enquanto um marco histórico da cidade de Coimbra.
