Périplos e Peregrinações: Gênese e Construção do Espaço das Narrativas de Viagens

Abstract

Situada no campo de estudos das narrativas de viagens, esta tese apresenta e elabora uma nova perspectiva de leitura e análise crítica sobre a unidade discursiva de tais narrativas no universo literário. Segundo o que defende, o primeiro passo se faz por distinguir a representação do espaço como a sua estratégia compositiva fundamental, abarcando por ela um conjunto nocional inerente à prática e ao reconhecimento da escrita de viagens – medição de distâncias, simulação de movimento, inventário descritivo, assimilação da diferença, etc. Posto isso, o argumento central da tese consiste em identificar e sistematizar duas linhas de força históricas matriciais desse espaçamento cognoscível das narrativas de viagens: a literatura periplográfica e a tradição de relatos de peregrinação cristã. Aqui, a periplografia é relida não apenas em seu enquadramento temporal circunscrito à Antiguidade, mas antes sob a criação de um modelo de escrita fundante. Já as peregrinações remetem a uma relação de percepção e expectativa sobre o espaço que, em última instância, direcionam as projeções sensíveis através de desdobramentos do lugar sagrado. Ainda que tal hipótese de leitura possa ser aplicada a narrativas de viagens de diferentes contextos epocais, neste trabalho foi balizada pelo período das grandes explorações marítimas portuguesas, em torno dos séculos XV e XVI. Entretanto, pelo viés histórico-evolutivo aplicado a esta investigação, o corpus recolhido e discutido durante os capítulos reporta a um critério qualitativo em função de um movimento de construção e desenvolvimento das narrativas de viagens ao longo do tempo.

Situated whithin the field of travel narrative studies, this thesis presents and elaborates a new perspective of reading and critical analysis about the discursive unity of such narratives in the literary universe. According to what it argues, the first step is to distinguish the representation of space as its fundamental compositional strategy, encompassing by it a notional set inherent to the practice and recognition of travel writing – measurement of distances, simulation of movement, descriptive inventory, assimilation of difference, and so on. That said, the central argument of the thesis consists in identifying and systematizing two matrix historical force lines of this cognizable spacing of travel narratives: periplography literature and the tradition of Christian pilgrimage accounts. In this context, periplography is reread not only in its temporal framework circumscribed to antiquity, but rather under the creation of a founding writing model. Pilgrimages, on the other hand, refer to a relationship of perception and expectation about space that ultimately directs sensitive projections through unfoldings of the sacred place. Although this reading hypothesis can be applied to travel narratives from different epochal contexts, this work was based on the period of the great Portuguese maritime explorations, around the 15th and 16th centuries. However, by the historical-evolutive bias applied to this research, the corpus collected and discussed during the chapters reports to a qualitative criterion due to a movement of construction and development of travel narratives over time.
