As narrativas de sobreviventes de mutilação genital feminina: Uma Análise Fenomenológica Interpretativa

Abstract

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) constitutes a global cultural practice that persists, despite violating human rights and affecting the lives and integrity of many women across generations. In the Portuguese context, where FGM is illegal, the research highlights the challenges experienced by survivors. This study, based on Interpretative Phenomenology, explores, describes, and interprets the experiences of five Guinean women residing in Portugal who have undergone FGM.Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis provided a firsthand perspective on the survivors' experiences and how they make sense of them. Nine themes with subthemes emerged, portraying the complex cultural interpretations that shape survivors' experiences. The results provided insight into their stories regarding the framework and implications of the FGM experience, as well as current perspectives on it. The secrecy surrounding the practice is highlighted, along with the factors that sustain it, predominantly of cultural, gender, and religious nature. The reported consequences of FGM by participants are diverse, both physically and psychologically, with a profound impact on identity and interpersonal relationships. Abandoning the practice is associated with a shift in perspective and access to information/education. Participants particularly emphasise the importance of survivors' testimonies and the role that men can play in the change and eradication of FGM.The results not only offer a profound insight into FGM from the perspective of those who have experienced it but also point to significant practical implications.

A Mutilação Genital Feminina (MGF) constitui uma prática cultural global que persiste, apesar de violar os direitos humanos, afetando a vida e a integridade de muitas mulheres ao longo de gerações. No contexto português, onde a MGF é ilegal, a pesquisa destaca os desafios experienciados pelas sobreviventes. Este estudo, baseado na Fenomenologia Interpretativa, explora, descreve e interpreta as narrativas de cinco mulheres guineenses residentes em Portugal e que foram submetidas à MGF. A Análise Fenomenológica Interpretativa forneceu uma perspectiva em primeira mão sobre as experiências das sobreviventes e a forma como elas fazem sentido das mesmas. Resultaram nove temas, com subtemas, que retratam as complexas interpretações culturais que influenciam as perspetivas sobre as experiências das sobreviventes. Os resultados forneceram uma visão das suas histórias relativas ao enquadramento e implicações da experiência de MGF, bem como as perspetivas atuais sobre a mesma. Destaca-se o secretismo e o tabu que envolvem a prática, bem como os fatores que a mantêm, maioritariamente de ordem cultural, de género e religiosa. As consequências da MGF reportadas pelas participantes são várias, a nível físico e psicológico, com um forte impacto na identidade e nas relações interpessoais. O abandono da prática surge associado à mudança de enquadramento sociocultural e ao acesso à informação/educação. As participantes consideram particularmente importante os testemunhos das sobreviventes e o papel que o homem pode representar na mudança e na erradicação da MGF. Os resultados não só proporcionam uma visão aprofundada da MGF pela perspetiva de quem a viveu, mas também apontam para implicações práticas significativas.
