O que não haveis de comer: Fome e Saciedade na obra de Gil Vicente

Abstract

O propósito desta investigação, decorrente de uma análise das práticas de comensalidade quinhentista, procura responder à questão da eventual correspondência de tipologia alimentar associada aos diferentes géneros dramatúrgicos que podem distinguir-se na obra vicentina. No trabalho em apreço propõe-se uma leitura interdisciplinar da História da Alimentação, por um lado e dos Estudos Dramatúrgicos, por outro, centrada na obra de Gil Vicente, considerando os diferentes géneros que a enformam: farsas, comédias e moralidades. Embora assumindo a totalidade da obra como horizonte, fixa-se um corpus de treze autos, o que representa cerca de um quarto da produção vicentina. A seleção assenta em critérios de ocorrência temática e amplitude genológica, uma vez que nos restantes textos as referências alimentares são escassas, pontuais e de menor relevância para a sistematização e correspondência que se pretende aferir. No teatro de Gil Vicente têm necessariamente eco as circunstâncias histórico-sociais, embora essa repercussão não ocorra sob forma direta ou especular. Partindo dessa premissa, a Compilação, vinda a lume em 1562, deve ser encarada de forma ficcional e não numa dimensão literal e documental. A investigação convoca um conjunto de saberes que depreende uma visão holística do universo alimentar moderno, relacionando a sua dimensão material e simbólica, num convénio entre a pesquisa documental, estudos descritivos e estudos histórico-analíticos. Evidencia-se o valor dos referentes alimentares e dos seus significados histórico-contextuais, atendendo ao vínculo verosímil existente entre a hierarquia dos alimentos e os grupos sociais. Analisam-se nomeadamente a primazia ou a escassez de alguns alimentos e a preponderância de outros, distinguindo sinais de fartura, saciedade e fome, nos planos fisiológico, místico e doutrinal. Identificam-se as metáforas, as alegorias e os símbolos que emanam da obra, procurando conhecer os significados dramatúrgicos, agregando os signos alimentares em função dos diferentes géneros aferindo a perspetiva hermenêutica e simbólica desses indicadores. É esta simbologia alimentar que se sistematiza e engloba numa leitura histórica e literária da Compilação. Nesta visão global do universo alimentar moderno, a obra vicentina permite um novo tipo de compreensão, na medida em que abrange uma dimensão material e metafórica. Para tanto, sublinha-se a importância histórica, simbólica e religiosa das referências e dos silêncios, bem como a expressão dessas alusões para a eficácia literária – dramática ou cómica – do texto.

The purpose of this investigation results from the analysis of 16th century eating practices. It aims at answering the question of the possible correspondence of food typology associated with the different dramaturgical genres that can be distinguished in Gil Vicente's work. This work proposes the interdisciplinary interpretation of the History of Food, and Vicente's Dramaturgical Studies, considering its different genres: farces, comedies and moralities. Although assuming the entirety of his literary production as a horizon, a corpus of thirteen works is fixed, which represent about a quarter of Vincente's production. The selection is based on criteria of thematic occurrence and variety of genres, since in the remaining texts food references are scarce, rare or less relevant for the systematisation and correspondence that we intend to assess. Historical and social circumstances necessarily echo in Gil Vicente's theater, although this repercussion does not occur directly or specularly. Based on this premise, the “Compilação", which came to light in 1562, must be seen from a fictional perspective and not from a literal or documental angle. This investigation brings together a set of knowledge that deduces a holistic vision of the modern food universe, by relating its material and symbolic dimensions, all balanced with documental research, descriptive and historical-analytical studies. The value of food references and their historical-contextual meanings are highlighted, given the likely link between food hierarchy and social groups. In particular, the primacy or scarcity of some food types and the preponderance of others are analysed, characterising signs of abundance, satiety or hunger, at physiological, mystical and doctrinal levels. Metaphors, allegories and symbols emanating from Gil Vicente's work are identified, aiming to understand its dramaturgical meanings, adding food badges according to the different genres, assessing the hermeneutic and symbolic perspective of those indicators. It is this food symbology that is systematised and encompassed in a historical and literary interpretation of the “Compilação". In this global vision of the modern food universe, Vincente's work allows for a new type of understanding, as it encompasses material and metaphorical dimensions. To this end, the historical, symbolic and religious importance of the references and silences under study is underlined, as well as the expression of these allusions for the literary – dramatic or comic – effectiveness of the text.
