A Atividade do Médico e Cirurgião Bissaya-Barreto nos Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra, 1911-1956: Contributos para a História da Medicina e Cirurgia em Portugal

Abstract

Com o objetivo de retraçar, analisar e compreender a relação entre Bissaya-Barreto, a Medicina e Cirurgia, a presente tese parte de um quadro teórico e conceptual, incluindo o tema, a problemática, o objeto de estudo, a historiografia, fontes e metodologia, delimitação cronológica e estrutura. Sendo o foco principal do esforço de investigação, a atividade de Bissaya-Barreto nos Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra, entre 1911-1956, principiamos a nossa análise à faceta multifacetada de um dos médicos mais influentes, em Portugal, durante o séc. XX,integrando na Súmula Biográfica os diversos elementos compósitos da sua vida preenchida: origens, o estudante, o republicano, o livre pensador e maçon, o professor, o médico-cirurgião, o parlamentar, o procurador, o autarca, o gestor e o empresário – facetas que revelam uma personalidade de trajeto invulgar e que anunciam, de certa forma, as interligações entre múltiplos setores de atividade, nos quais se movimentou entre a luz e a sombra, nos múltiplos palcos da vida e os seus bastidores. O quadro teórico e conceptual foi O quadro teórico e conceptual foi alargado à necessidade do enquadramento temático, espácio-temporal, na História da Medicina e da Cirurgia, definindo-se, desta forma, os períodos fundamentais e marcos respetivos da sua evolução, para melhor contextualizar a emergência de Bissaya-Barreto enquanto figura cimeira da Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia de Coimbra. Desta forma detivemo-nos, com particular interesse, no objeto de estudo fundamental da presente tese: a sua atividade médico cirúrgica nos HUC, definindo a metodologia e analisando os dados disponíveis. Porém, um ponto de partida e não de chegada, que permitiu desenhar a sua atividade enquanto médico e cirurgião, aplicando o conceito de «descentralização da cirurgia», uma atividade extrauniversitária, sem a qual não seria possível evidenciar toda a sua dinâmica em torno da cirurgia, de que damos especial nota na expressão geográfico-territorial das unidades e estabelecimentos onde prestou serviços clínicos. Procurámos perceber, por outro lado, não só as continuidades, mas sobretudo, as ruturas com os seus pares, no seio do Conselho da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra, órgão determinante para aferir do pensamento ideológico dominante, não só ao nível das decisões e soluções tomadas do ponto de vista médico e cirúrgico, mas também de questões institucionais que se caldearam com dinâmicas pessoais, que ditaram a impossibilidade de Bissaya-Barreto se afirmar, contrariamente ao que parecia estar destinado, a figura cimeira da Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia de Coimbra. Tendo ficado na História, sobretudo pela Obra Médico-Social que levantou, a partir da Junta Geral do Distrito de Coimbra - desde que dela tomou posse, como presidente, em 1927 - entendemos como fundamental promover o seu breve estudo, facilitando, deste modo, a compreensão do caminho alternativo que empreendeu, fora dos HUC, no domínio da Medicina e da Cirurgia.

With the objective of retracing, analyzing and understanding the relationship between Bissaya-Barreto, Medicine and Surgery, this thesis starts from a theoretical and conceptual framework, including the theme, the problem, the object of study, the historiography, sources and methodology, chronological delimitation and structure. Being the main focus of the research effort, the activity of Bissaya-Barreto in the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra, between 1911-1956, we begin our analysis of the multifaceted facet of one of the most influential doctors, in Portugal, during the 19th century XX, integrating in the Biographical Summary the various composite elements of his full life: origins, the student, the republican, the free thinker and Freemason, the professor, the doctor-surgeon, the parliamentarian, the attorney, the mayor, the manager and the entrepreneur– facets that reveal a personality of an unusual path and that announce, in a way, the interconnections between multiple sectors of activity, in which he moved between light and shadow, in the multiple stages of life and behind the scenes. The theoretical and conceptual framework was extended to the need for a thematic, spatio-temporal framework in the History of Medicine and Surgery, thus defining the fundamental periods and respective milestones of its evolution, in order to better contextualize the emergence of Bissaya- Barreto as a top figure at the Coimbra School of Medicine and Surgery. In this way, we focused, with particular interest, on the fundamental object of study of this thesis: its medical-surgical activity at HUC, defining the methodology and analyzing the available data. However, a starting point and not an arrival point, which allowed him to design his activity as a doctor and surgeon, applying the concept of «decentralization of surgery», an extra-university activity, without which it would not be possible to show all itsdynamics around the surgery, which we give special attention to the geographical-territorial expression of the units and establishments where he provided clinical services. We sought to understand, on the other hand, not only the continuities, but above all, the ruptures with their peers, within the Council of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, a determining body to assess the dominant ideological thinking, not only at the level of decisions and solutions taken from a medical and surgical point of view, but also institutional issues that were merged with personal dynamics, which dictated the impossibility of Bissaya Barreto asserting himself, contrary to what seemed to be destined, the topfigure of the School of Medicine and Surgery from Coimbra. Having gone down in history, especially for the Medical-Social Work that it raised, from the General Board of the District of Coimbra - since he took office as president, in 1927 - we understand how fundamental it is to promote its brief study, thus facilitating the the understanding of the alternative path he took, outside the HUC, in the field of Medicine and Surgery.
