O Instante do Amor: Tempo e Virtude em Vladimir Jankélévitch

Abstract

Vladimir Jankélévitch ocupa um lugar singular no panorama da filosofia de expressão francesa do séc. XX. Ainda que desalinhado em relação às grandes correntes do seu tempo, o seu pensamento inscreve-se em duas frentes plenamente activas do debate contemporâneo: o da crítica e superação da metafísica –para além da “onto-teologia” tradicional– e o do reinvestimento do pensamento ético-moral a partir da teoria das virtudes, que o deontologismo e o consequencialismo modernos tinham desvitalizado, e cujo ressurgimento hodierno claramente antecipou.O propósito fundamental de Jankélévitch consistiu em meditar a moral a partir do tempo; de modo mais preciso, pensar a noção e a prática da virtude, entendida tradicionalmente como uma disposição estável para o Bem, na instável correlação entre a emergência do instante e a irreversibilidade do devir. Fundar uma ética da(s) virtude(s) numa metafísica do instante, qual súbita impulsão metacronológica de um tempo moral kairológico, tal é o intento paradoxal que nos parece um dos eixos estruturantes deste pensamento e que esta tese procurou seguir e deslindar. A presente tese fixou-se três objectivos fundamentais. (I) Determinar a situação e originalidade do pensamento filosófico de Jankélévitch, a partir da caracterização geral dos seus temas, do seu método e do seu estilo. (II) Identificar os contornos fundamentais da sua metafísica, nomeadamente, a metafísica do instante inserta na filosofia do tempo. (III) Apresentar os elementos estruturantes do seu pensamento ético-moral, tomando como eixo a teoria da(s) virtude(s), previamente assente numa caracterização da condição humana, que mais não é do que uma antropologia filosófica situada na charneira da metafísica e da ética. Uma vez definida a natureza da consciência moral, da liberdade e do bem, desenvolve-se uma analítica das virtudes encimada pelo amor. Cabe a um puro amor de caridade constituir o fundamento dinâmico da ética e o pneuma da moral.

Vladimir Jankélévitch has a singular place in the panorama of twentieth-century French-speaking philosophy. His thinking, although unaligned from the major currents of his time, is part of two fully active fronts of contemporary debate: that of the critique and overcoming of metaphysics - beyond traditional "ontotheology" - and that of the reinvestment of ethical-moral thought based on the theory of virtues, which modern deontology and consequentialism had devalued, and of which he clearly anticipated the contemporary revival. Jankélévitch's fundamental purpose was to think morality from the standpoint of time; more precisely, to think the notion and practice of virtue, traditionally understood as a stable disposition towards Good, in the unstable correlation between the emergence of the instant and the irreversibility of becoming. To found a virtue ethics on a metaphysics of the instant, like a sudden metachronological impulse of a kairological moral time, is the paradoxical intention that seems to us one of the structuring axes of this thought and which this thesis has tried to follow and unravel. The present thesis has three fundamental objectives: (I) To determine the situation and originality of Jankélévitch's philosophical thought, from the general characterization of its subjects, method and style. (II) To identify the fundamental outlines of his metaphysics, namely, the metaphysics of instant within the philosophy of time. (III) To present the structural elements of his ethical-moral thought, taking as its axis the theory of virtue(s), previously based on a characterization of the human condition, which is nothing more than a philosophical anthropology situated at the hinge of metaphysics and ethics. Once the nature of moral consciousness, freedom and the good have been defined, an analysis of the virtues is developed, headed by love. Pure love of charity is the dynamic foundation of ethics and the pneuma of morality.
