EUGENIA LATINA EM PORTUGAL E NO BRASIL (PRIMEIRA METADE DO SÉCULO XX)

Abstract

O estudo sobre a eugenia remete para a apreensão de distintos movimentos intelectuais e histo- ricidades próprias nos processos de formação de nacionalismos e suas respectivas construções identitárias. Este artigo estabelece comparativos entre Portugal e o Brasil, no contexto da primeira metade do século XX, de forma a discernir, especificamente, sobre algumas das questões centrais para a eugenia denominada latina, ou seja, do pensamento eugênico em países considerados de herança latina. A bibliografia utilizada permite distinguir diferenças e aproximações entre a eugenia latina e a eugenia maioritariamente adotada em países do norte da Europa. São analisadas proposições de fundamentação da denominada ciência eugênica, que também em suas formas latinas propagaram noções de superioridade cultural e ideias de cunho racial.

The study on eugenics refers to the apprehension of distinct intellectual movements and their own historicity in the formation process of nationalisms and their respective identity constructions. This article established some comparisons between Portugal and Brazil during the first half of the 20th century aiming to specifically discern some of the fundamental issues of so-called Latin eugenics, i.e., the eugenic thinking in countries considered to be of Latin heritage. The bibliographical research aimed to distinguish differences and similarities between Latin eugenics and eugenics adopted in northern European countries. Based on the consulted authors, several proposals were investigated to justify the so-called eugenic science, that even in the Latin-types propagated notions of cultural superiority based on racial ideas.
