Lugar Literário em São Pedro de Moel - Centro de Estudo e Interpretação da obra de Afonso Lopes Vieira

Abstract

This dissertation stems from a design challenge titled "(Re-)Pensar São Pedro de Moel, 2020," proposed in the course unit of Project Studio II-C, under the theme of Territory and Landscape. The study was formally protocolled and established in collaboration with several entities: the Municipal Council of Marinha Grande, the "Friends of São Pedro de Moel Beach" group, the PROTUR association (Association for the Promotion of Tourism), and the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra.Dissatisfied with the clear decline of the urban nucleus, especially following successive extreme climate events and devastations, such as destructive fires and storms, these organizations propose that, through an exercise in urban design and architecture, a new direction can be charted to boost the development of a remarkable and unique territory. The strategy adopted by the class naturally aims for sustainable development, rooted in the natural assets and cultural values of the surrounding landscape, as well as the recognized heritage value of the existing built environment in the small urban cluster. To address the various identified problems, after a detailed analysis conducted locally and as a group, further refined in the Project Laboratory, goals and objectives were set. Thus, it was decided to establish a network of small interventions with the aim of instilling and incorporating new dynamics capable of increasing interest and demand for this territory. This is based on the creation of 'Places' and 'Pathways' that promote integration and relate territorially and thematically, not only among themselves, enriching the local offering, but primarily at regional and national levels, integrating broader networks of visitation and demand based on the concept of 'Rhizome.'The individual proposal manifests as a multifaceted response to the various challenges listed in this thesis: the evident partial abandonment of the former residence of Afonso Lopes Vieira (ALV), the 'Casa Nau,' and the holiday colony he built and bequeathed to the community – a factor that fits into the limited appreciation of cultural heritage on-site; also, the lack of space to properly display the writer and poet's collection and legacy, as well as a complete absence of spaces capable of accommodating the study of his work and collection; furthermore, the lack of intentions regarding the prevention and protection of riverside and coastal buildings – including the heritage left by ALV – which are recurrent victims of increasingly frequent coastal inundations; and finally, to actively address the predicted rise in sea levels, which also affect the beachfront experience of public spaces and the beach itself.With these purposes in mind, the intervention was divided into two phases, undertaken at different scales. The first phase stems from the urban design aspect, involving the creation of a pathway and the reconfiguration of the boundaries of the urban space at a lower elevation, with the intention of mitigating the continuous oceanic assaults. This phase includes the redesign of the beach and its support facilities, the Afonso Lopes Vieira Square, and a maritime marginal pathway connecting paths and boardwalks converging here from the dunes to the south, the cliffs to the north, and the Ribeira do Olho Park to the east. In a second stage, the intervention developed the design of a new building, intended to materialize the Study and Interpretation Center of Afonso Lopes Vieira's work, with the insertion of a small literary cultural facility in open and direct dialogue with the Casa Nau. Located precisely in the heart of the cluster, it aims to complement the Literary Place, which we believe should be one of the central pieces for enhancing the identity and collective memories in São Pedro de Moel.

Esta dissertação decorre de um desafio de projeto, intitulado “(Re-)Pensar São Pedro de Moel, 2020”, proposto na unidade curricular de Atelier de Projeto II-C, sob o lema Território e Paisagem. O estudo foi protocolado e formalizado entre diversas entidades — Câmara Municipal da Marinha Grande, Grupo dos “Amigos da Praia de São Pedro de Moel”, a Associação PROTUR (Associação para a Promoção do Turismo) e o Departamento de Arquitetura, da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra.Inconformados com o evidente declínio do núcleo urbano, sobretudo, após sucessivos eventos climáticos extremos e devastações — como incêndios e tempestades destruidores — estas organizações propõe que, através de um exercício de projeto urbano e arquitetura, se possa delinear um novo rumo, capaz de alavancar o desenvolvimento de um território notável e ímpar. A estratégia que foi adotada pela turma visa, naturalmente, o desenvolvimento sustentável, alicerçado nas mais-valias naturais e valores culturais, da paisagem envolvente e do valor patrimonial reconhecido, do parque edificado, existente no pequeno aglomerado urbano. De modo a combater os mais diversos problemas identificados, após análise detalhada desenvolvida localmente e em grupo, depois apurada em Laboratório de Projeto, fixaram-se metas e objetivos. Assim, ficou decidido estabelecer se uma rede de pequenas intervenções, com o objetivo de instalar e inscrever novas dinâmicas, capazes de alavancar o interesse e a procura deste território, com base na criação de ‘Lugares’ e ‘Percursos’ que promovem a integração e se relacionam territorial e tematicamente, não só entre si, enriquecendo a oferta local, mas sobretudo regional e nacionalmente, integrando redes mais amplas de visitação e procura, baseados no conceito de ‘Rizoma’.A proposta individual, manifesta-se como uma resposta múltipla, aos diferentes desafios seguidamente elencados nesta tese: o parcial abandono, evidente, da antiga residência de Afonso Lopes Vieira (ALV), a ‘Casa Nau’, e da colónia de férias, por si construídas e legadas à comunidade — fator que se inscreve numa escassa valorização do património cultural no local —; também, a falta de espaço para dispor condignamente a coleção e o espólio do escritor e poeta, bem como uma total inexistência de espaços capazes de acomodar o estudo da sua obra e da sua coleção; depois, a falta de intenções relativas à prevenção e proteção do edificado ribeirinho e costeiro — onde o património legado por ALV se inclui —, que é vítima recorrente dos galgamentos marítimos, cada vez mais frequentes; e, por fim, para dar uma resposta ativa à subida previsível do nível médio das águas do mar, que afetam também a vivência balnear dos espaços públicos e da praia.Com estes propósitos, dividiu-se a intervenção em duas fases, inscritas num exercício em diferentes escalas. A primeira decorre da vertente de desenho urbano, com a criação de um percurso e a reconfiguração dos limites do espaço urbano, na cota baixa, com a intenção de mitigar as contínuas investidas do oceano. Assim se desenvolve o redesenho da praia e das suas instalações de apoio, e a Praça Afonso Lopes Vieira, além de um percurso marginal marítimo que liga caminhos e passadiços, que aqui convergem, vindos das dunas a sul, das arribas a norte, e do parque da Ribeira do Olho, a nascente. Numa segunda etapa, a intervenção desenvolveu o desenho de um novo edifício, onde se pretende materializar o Centro de Estudo e Interpretação da obra de Afonso Lopes Vieira, com a inserção de um pequeno equipamento cultural, de cariz literário, em diálogo aberto e direto com a Casa Nau. Situado exatamente no coração do aglomerado, destina-se a complementar o Lugar Literário que, acreditamos, deverá ser uma das peças centrais para a valorização da identidade e memórias coletivas, em São Pedro de Moel.
