Abstract

This document, produced as part of the "Curricular Internship" course, includes the monograph entitled "The Impact of Intestinal Microbiota on Neurodegeneration" and the internship reports from Farmácia Figueiredo and BasePoint Consulting Services.With regard to the internship reports, a SWOT (Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis is first carried out for the internship in community pharmacy, which took place at Farmácia Figueiredo, located in Coimbra, under the guidance of Dr Capitolina Figueiredo Pinho. Next, in a second report, a SWOT analysis is carried out, this time relating to an internship in regulatory affairs at BasePoint, under the guidance of Dr David Dias Costa. This company provides consultancy services in the area of biocidal products, food supplements, cosmetic products, medical devices and REACH and CLP regulations. Finally, I present the monograph "The Impact of the Intestinal Microbiota on Neurodegeneration", which takes as its starting point the growing morbidity that neurodegenerative diseases represent today. The clinical picture of these diseases is characterised by slow and progressive neuronal loss, associated with cognitive decline, with a consequent loss of independence for these patients. In addition, these diseases represent a significant economic burden on society. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the topic, this paper aimed to review the current literature in order to gather the most up-to-date scientific knowledge on the relationship between the gut microbiota and neurodegeneration. Throughout the text, various concepts that are essential for understanding the topic have been addressed and deepened, such as the composition of the intestinal microbiota and its particularities in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, and the various communication pathways between the microbiota and the brain (which include the microbiota-intestine-brain axis). Finally, some of the therapeutic options that are currently undergoing extensive research based on intestinal microbiota modulation were discussed, such as the use of probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics, faecal microbiota transplantation, antibiotic therapy and diet.

O presente documento, elaborado no âmbito da unidade curricular “Estágio Curricular”, inclui a monografia intitulada “O Impacto da Microbiota Intestinal na Neurodegeneração” e os relatórios de estágio na Farmácia Figueiredo e na BasePoint Consulting Services.Relativamente aos relatórios de estágio, inicialmente é realizada uma análise SWOT (Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) referente ao estágio em farmácia comunitária, que decorreu na Farmácia Figueiredo, localizada em Coimbra, sob a orientação da Dra. Capitolina Figueiredo Pinho. De seguida é realizada novamente, num segundo relatório, uma análise SWOT, sendo esta relativa ao estágio na área de assuntos regulamentares, na empresa BasePoint, sob a orientação do Dr. David Dias Costa. Esta fornece serviços de consultoria na área dos produtos biocidas, suplementos alimentares, produtos de cosmética, dispositivos médicos e regulamentos REACH e CLP. Por fim, apresento a monografia “O Impacto da Microbiota Intestinal na Neurodegeneração”, que tem como ponto de partida a crescente morbilidade que as doenças neurodegenerativas representam na atualidade. O quadro clínico destas patologias é caracterizado pela perda neuronal lenta e progressiva, associada ao declínio cognitivo, com consequente perda de independência destes doentes. Para além disto, estas doenças representam um significativo fardo económico para a sociedade. Assim, procurando um maior entendimento do tema, este trabalho pretendeu fazer uma revisão da literatura, no sentido de reunir os conhecimentos científicos mais atuais no que respeita à relação entre a microbiota intestinal e a neurodegeneração. Ao longo do texto, abordaram-se e aprofundaram-se diversos conceitos essenciais para a compreensão do tema, tais como a composição da microbiota intestinal e as suas particularidades em doentes com doenças neurodegenerativas e as diversas vias de comunicação entre a microbiota e o cérebro (as quais abrangem o eixo microbiota-intestino-cérebro). Por fim, abordaram-se algumas das opções terapêuticas que têm sofrido extensa investigação atualmente, baseadas na modulação da microbiota intestinal, tais como o uso de probióticos, prebióticos, e simbióticos, o transplante da microbiota fecal, a toma de antibióticos e a dieta.
