School stand out as one of the most influential among the institutions that shape individuals, societies, our own ways of life as well as our worldviews. To that extent the essay highlights some of the most widespread features in the early Jesuit High School system. It argues that the foundations underlying those early features are found in Ratio Studiorum, a normative document that after proving very successful in many European cities, would eventually become foundational for the modern school system as well. Although only a very specific period of the History of Education is dealt with in this study, the A. claims that it should be looked upon as a major breakthrough as far as institutionalization of formal teaching in Europe is concerned. The merits and shortcoming of current school models, today's organization of knowledge should be measured against the backfrop of centuries-old Jesuit school models.
