A territorialização da atividade do medico e cirurgião Bissaya-Barreto

Abstract

Analisa-se, neste artigo, a figura de Fernando Baeta Bissaya-Barreto Rosa (1886-1974), destacando alguns aspectos da actividade desenvolvida enquanto médico e cirurgião. A primeira parte do trabalho consiste numa Súmula Biográfica, revelando as origens, o percurso escolar e universitário, a ascensão a professor da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra, bem como o envolvimento social e político em prol da Obra de Medicina Social - que dinamizou no âmbito da presidência da Junta Geral do Distrito (depois Junta de Província da Beira Litoral e, por fim, Junta Distrital de Coimbra). A segunda parte do trabalho foca-se na actividade clínica exercida durante o período 1939-1965, definindo, por um lado a territorialização médico-cirúrgica (ou descentralização) e, por outro, um balanço operatório, problematizando, por fim, as críticas que ecoaram a alguns dos seus procedimentos.

This paper analyzes the figure of Fernando Baeta Bissaya-Barreto Rosa (1886-1974), highlighting some aspects of the activity he developed as a doctor and surgeon. The first part of the work consists of a Biographical Summary, revealing his origins, his school life and university career, the rise to professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, as well as the social and political involvement in favor of the Work of Social Medicine - which he fostered as chairmanship of the District General Board (then Beira Litoral Provincial Board and, finally, Coimbra District Board). The second part of the work focuses on the clinical activity he performed during the period 1939-1965, defining, on the one hand, the medical-surgical territorialization (or decentralization) and, on the other hand, an operative balance, and finally problematizing the criticisms that echoed regarding some of his procedures.
