A Transferência Linguística na Tradução: A Influência da Língua Inglesa

Abstract

The ongoing expansion of the English language has influenced several languages around the world, and Portuguese has not been an exception. This report addresses this matter and the phenomenon of linguistic transfer, i.e., the transference of linguistic elements from one language, with which the speaker is familiar, to a second language. It is common for languages in contact to influence each other, causing permanent changes in each linguistic system. These changes may or may not be accepted. Until they are accepted, they are often viewed as deviations from the norm. Linguistic transfer can affect any bilingual person, but this study will focus on its influence on translators. A translator is very much prone to be influenced by linguistic transfer, and, consequently, to make mistakes in their native language. For that reason, it is important to analyze these types of situations so that they can be avoided in the future. This investigation was conducted based on the texts translated during the internship. Furthermore, an episode of a podcast between two bilinguals was also analysed to observe how, in a conversation between two speakers who share the same mother tongue, the English language can have such an impact on the Portuguese language. The analysis, both of the oral texts as well as the written texts, allows to observe the influence of the English language. The translation errors were mainly grammatical deviations that made the text sound unnatural, but not unreadable or ungrammatical. In the future, it is likely that the English language will continue to spread over the world, weighing more in the linguistic market. Consequently, the deviations of today will be more common, and will possibly make their way into Portuguese grammar.

A crescente expansão da língua inglesa tem vindo a influenciar várias línguas à volta do globo e o português não é uma exceção. O presente trabalho foca-se exatamente nesta questão e no fenómeno da transferência linguística, isto é, a transferência de elementos linguísticos de uma língua, com a qual o falante está familiarizado, para uma segunda língua. É comum as línguas que estão em contacto influenciarem-se mutuamente, podendo mesmo causar alterações permanentes nas características da língua. Até essas alterações serem aceites, se o forem, são consideradas como desvios da norma. A transferência pode afetar qualquer falante bilíngue, mas este estudo foca-se na influência que esta tem nos tradutores. Um tradutor está altamente sujeito a ceder à transferência linguística e, consequentemente, a cometer erros na sua língua materna, pelo que é importante analisar situações em que isto acontece para que possa ser evitado no futuro. Esta investigação foi feita com base nos textos trabalhados no estágio. Para além disso, foi ainda examinado um episódio de um podcast entre dois portugueses bilíngues, para observar a forma como, numa conversa entre dois falantes que partilham a mesma língua materna, a língua inglesa consegue ter tanto peso. A análise, tanto de textos orais como de textos escritos, permite observar a forma como os falantes bilíngues são influenciados pela língua inglesa. Os erros de tradução foram, maioritariamente, desvios gramaticais que tornam o texto pouco natural, mas não ilegível ou agramatical. No futuro, é provável que a língua inglesa se continue a dissipar pelo mundo e a ganhar mais força no mercado linguístico. Com isso, os desvios de hoje poderão ser mais comuns, passando mesmo a integrarem-se na gramática.
