O Movimento Operário Português em Inícios do Século XX. Cultura Política e Reportórios de Luta: o caso de A Sementeira (1908-1919).

Abstract

A Sementeira was an anarchist magazine founded in 1908, which lasted until 1919, with na interruption between 1913 and 1916. Its director was Hilário Marques, a naval arsenalist. It was therefore one of the most enduring journals of the Portuguese labour movement at the beginning of the 20th century and one of the most important in its theoretical and practical definition. It was born at a time in the history of the Portuguese workers' movement when it was beginning to organise itself politically. Its duration, from 1908 to 1919, allows one to take an anarchist look at one of the decisive periods in 20th century Portuguese history which included, for example, the fall of the Monarchy and the establishment of the Republic in 1910, the First World War and the Russian Revolution of 1917. This work aims to focus on a Portuguese anarchist magazine, writing in a particular time and context, in order to better understand the Portuguese labour movement to which it belongs. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to analyse how European anarchist precepts developed and how the magazine adapted them to the Portuguese reality. On the other hand, the aim is to focus on and analyse the magazine's intellectual positions on the issues that are considered the most important in its repertoire of struggles and which, it is argued, constitute the core of its political culture. It was decided to divide this work into an analysis of some of the most important themes in the magazine's doctrinal definition: teaching and education, the concept of the State and opposition to patronage, the social question and anti-militarism in the context of the First World War.Thus, the analysis is based on the idea that looking at the workers' movement as a political culture that interacts with the society of its time and with other political cultures allows for a better understanding of its intellectual fluidity, which characterised it. Thus, by focusing on these vectors, which are considered to be at the heart of A Sementeira's political culture, one can better understand what criticisms the Portuguese anarchists made of the society and institutions of their time, and the proposals they developed to change them.

A Sementeira foi uma revista anarquista fundada em 1908, que dura até 1919, com uma interrupção entre 1913 e 1916, tendo como diretor Hilário Marques, arsenalista da Marinha. Foi, por isso, uma das mais duradouras revistas do movimento operário português de inícios do século XX e uma das mais importantes na sua definição teórico-prática. Nasce num momento da história do movimento operário português em que este se começava a organizar politicamente. A sua duração, de 1908 a 1919, permite um olhar anarquista sobre um dos períodos decisivos da história portuguesa do século XX que passa, por exemplo, pela queda da Monarquia e pela instauração da República em 1910, pela Primeira Guerra e pela Revolução Russa de 1917. Este trabalho pretende centrar-se numa revista anarquista portuguesa, que escreve num determinado tempo e contexto, para melhor compreender o movimento operário português. Assim, o objetivo é duplo, por um lado, pretende-se analisar como se desenvolvem os preceitos anarquistas europeus, e como a revista os adapta à realidade portuguesa. Por outro, pretende-se focar e analisar as posições intelectuais da revista relativamente aos temas que se consideram mais importantes no seu reportório de luta e que, argumenta-se, constituem o âmago da sua cultura política. Desta forma, optou-se por dividir o presente trabalho numa análise de alguns dos temas que mais importância têm na definição doutrinária da revista, o ensino e a educação, o conceito de Estado e a oposição ao patronato, a questão social e o antimilitarismo no contexto da Primeira Guerra.A análise, assim, parte da ideia segundo a qual olhar o movimento operário como uma cultura política, que interage com a sociedade do seu tempo e com outras culturas políticas, permite uma melhor compreensão da sua fluidez intelectual, que o caracterizou. Assim, focando estes vetores, que se considera constituírem o cerne da cultura política d’A Sementeira, melhor se entenderá quais as críticas que os anarquistas portugueses faziam à sociedade e às instituições do seu tempo, e as propostas que desenvolvem para as alterar.
