Abstract

The Destination Image of Viseu: An Analysis of Visitors' Online Reviews. The general aim of this study was to examine the image of Viseu as a tourist destination, a Portuguese city in the Central region of Portugal, based on online reviews. A qualitative investigation was carried out by analyzing the content of Google Reviews, the online comments on Google Maps, regarding a route in Viseu that includes a number of the city's attractions. A total of 450 reviews published between August 2022 and July 2023 on the platform were considered for analysis. In line with the statistics on guests staying in tourist accommodation in the Municipality of Viseu, most of the comments were made in Portuguese. The results of the study suggest that the image of the destination is positive, with the affective dimension standing out in the comments analyzed. The analysis also suggests that Viseu is perceived as an aesthetically pleasing and visually attractive destination. The research conducted contributes to filling the gap in destination image studies in medium-sized cities, as well as providing useful and relevant information for the management of the tourist destination of Viseu. In Chapter 2, we review the literature to frame the study and formulate the research questions. This is followed by Chapter 3, which deals with the research methodology used, the context of the study and data collection. Chapter 4 refers to the results and, finally, Chapter 5 presents the discussion and conclusions, answering the research questions and presenting the practical and theoretical contributions, the limitations of the study and suggestions for future research.

Este estudo teve como objetivo geral examinar a imagem de Viseu como destino turístico, cidade portuguesa na região Centro de Portugal, com base em comentários online. Assim, procedeu-se a uma investigação qualitativa, por meio de análise de conteúdo das Google Reviews, comentários online do Google Maps, relativos a um percurso em Viseu e que engloba um conjunto de atrações da cidade. Foram considerados para análise um total de 450 comentários, publicados entre agosto de 2022 e julho de 2023 naquela plataforma. Em linha com as estatísticas relativas a hóspedes em alojamento turístico no Município de Viseu, a maioria dos comentários foi redigida em português. Os resultados do estudo sugerem que a imagem do destino é positiva, destacando-se a dimensão afetiva nos comentários analisados. A análise sugere ainda que Viseu é percebido como um destino esteticamente agradável e visualmente atraente. A pesquisa realizada contribui para colmatar a falta de estudos de imagem de destinos em cidades médias, bem como fornece informação útil e relevante para a gestão do destino turístico Viseu. No Capítulo 2, procede-se à revisão de literatura para enquadramento do estudo e à formulação das questões em investigação. Segue-se o Capítulo 3, relativo à metodologia de investigação utilizada, contexto do estudo e recolha de dados. O Capítulo 4 refere-se aos resultados e, por fim, o Capítulo 5 apresenta a discussão e conclusões, respondendo às questões em investigação e apresentando os contributos práticos e teóricos, as limitações do estudo e sugestões de pesquisa futura.
