CIL II 403 – Reflexões em torno de uma ara perdida

Abstract

Por um manuscrito de 1630, houve conhecimento do texto de uma inscrição romana, que, pelas múltiplas informações que dele se poderiam desprender, tem sido alvo de variadas publicações. Trata-se, de facto, da dedicatória feita por um soldado, de origem lusitana, que identifica o corpo militar em que prestou serviço e em que cargo, a uma divindade mui provavelmente pertencente ao panteão da sua terra de origem, perto de S. Pedro do Sul, no coração do conventus Scallabitanus. Propõe-se, afinal, que a divindade honrada haja sido identificada com Sulis, a grande ‘padroeira’ da conhecida estação balnear romana (e actual) Bath, na Inglaterra, cujo nome foi Aquae Sulis.

A Portuguese manuscript of 1630 show us the text of a Roman inscription, that give us very important news about, for example, the indigenous pantheon and about the religion of the Roman army, even the cult of indigenous deities by the soldiers. Many authors have already study and comment this epigraph, above all because isn’t clear neither the divinity’s identification neither the charge (imaginifer? signifer?) of the soldier. The account of all these contributes are here mentioned and, at the end, the author proposes that the indigenous divinity honoured is identified with Sulis, the goddess of the famous Aquae Sulis, in England.
