Pseudo-tipografia: do sentido verbal ao sentido visual

Abstract

Starting from the text "The Reinvention of Reading" by Ana Hatherly, and based on the long tradition of pseudo-writing, this project aims to create a computer system that allows the creation of asemic pseudo-typographic forms that we call "signs". The exploration of the visual meaning of typographic characters is still underexplored and is always based on their verbal meaning. Therefore, in this dissertation we endeavour to develop typefaces without semantic meaning, which lie between reading and seeing. In order to have the necessary foundations for creating the system, we deepened our knowledge of the area in which the dissertation is in - computationally and graphically - in order to understand what has already been done and how we could contribute to the area in question. In conclusion, we want to break new ground in typographic exploration by taking advantage of the modularity and plasticity of type, while debating what legibility is.

Partindo do texto «A Reinvenção da Leitura» de Ana Hatherly, e tendo por base a longa tradição da pseudo-escrita, este projeto visa criar um sistema computacional que permite a criação de formas pseudo-tipográficas assémicas que denominamos «signos». A exploração do sentido visual dos caracteres tipográficos está ainda pouco explorada e existe sempre em função do seu sentido verbal. Deste modo, nesta dissertação procuramos desenvolver tipos sem significado semântico, que se situem entre o ler e o ver. De modo a ter as bases necessárias para a criação do sistema, aprofundámos os nossos conhecimentos na área em que a dissertação se insere — computacional e gráficamente — de forma a perceber o que já foi feito e como poderíamos contribuir para a área em questão. Concluindo, queremos, com o sistema de geração de formas pseudo-tipográficas por nós criado, penetrar um novo caminho da exploração tipográfica, ao tirar partido da modularidade e plasticidade dos tipos, enquanto debatemos sobre o que é a legibilidade.
