Representações Sociais sobre o Abuso Sexual de Crianças numa amostra da população geral

Abstract

Social representations of child sexual abuse influence the way society understands and responds to the problem. Understanding these representations is essential for devising more effective prevention and intervention strategies, as well as for promoting a more aware and responsible society. This study therefore aims to identify social representations of child sexual abuse, using five instruments: a sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Social Representations of Child Sexual Abuse Questionnaire - Stories, the Social Representations of Child Sexual Abuse Questionnaire - Factors, the Scale of Beliefs about Child Sexual Abuse and the DESCA Social Disability Scale.The study analysed 206 individuals from the general population, examining the impact of demographic variables such as age, gender, educational qualifications and specific training in the field of sexual abuse. Results indicate participants, particularly males, show greater tolerance towards male victims when the offender is male. A positive finding is that the participants refrained from apportioning blame to the victim, indicating that accountability for the actions of the aggressors was not diminished by silence. It is encouraging that blame, which contributes to maintaining silence, was not present. The data shows that there is less tolerance than in a previous 2015 study, suggesting that there is an increase in knowledge and awareness of child sexual abuse. Information is acknowledged as a crucial tool in promoting understanding and prevention of the issue, emphasizing the significance of educational and awareness-raising campaigns. Consequently, the findings indicate a sustained requirement for focused endeavours to enhance public perception and response towards child sexual abuse in society

As representações sociais sobre o abuso sexual de crianças exercem influência na forma como a sociedade compreende e responde à problemática. Compreender estas representações torna-se essencial para deliniar estratégias mais eficazes de prevenção e intervenção, bem como na promoção de uma sociedade mais consciente e responsável. Desta forma, o presente estudo pretende identificar as representações sociais sobre o abuso sexual de crianças, recorrendo a cinco instrumentos: o questionário de dados sociodemográficos, o Questionário de Representações Sociais sobre o ASC – Histórias, o Questionário sobre ASC – Fatores, a Escala de Crenças sobre o ASC e a Escala de Desejabilidade Social DESCA. A amostra inclui 206 indivíduos da população em geral, tendo ainda sido analisada a influência das variáveis sexo, idade, habilitações literárias e formação específica na área do abuso sexual. Os resultados do estudo revelam tendência dos participantes, especialmente do sexo masculino, para maior tolerância quando a vítima é do sexo masculino e envolve uma agressora. Outro resultado relevante é a não culpabilização da vítima pelos participantes, o que é encorajador, uma vez que a culpa contribui para a manutenção do silêncio e diminui a responsabilização dos agressores. Comparando com um estudo anterior, de 2015, os dados mostram uma menor tolerância, indicando um crescente nível de informação e sensibilização sobre o abuso sexual de crianças. Reconhece-se a informação como uma ferramenta essencial para promover a compreensão e prevenção da problemática, ressaltando a importância de iniciativas educacionais e de sensibilização. Assim, os resultados sugerem a necessidade contína de esforços direcionados para melhorar a perceção e a resposta à questão do abuso sexual de crianças na sociedade.
