Representações Sociais dos Cuidados Paliativos em Portugal

Abstract

Os Cuidados Paliativos não aparentam ainda ser um conceito universal, existindo ainda várias opiniões e perceções divergentes acerca deste tipo cuidados de saúde. É importante por isso perceber quais são as representações sociais dos Cuidados Paliativos. Esta investigação propõe-se estudar as representações sociais dos Cuidados Paliativos em Portugal segundo a abordagem estrutural, de modo a compreender como é que os cuidados paliativos são percecionados em Portugal. Para o efeito foi utilizada a Teoria do Núcleo Central das representações sociais, tendo-se aplicado o método de evocação livre de palavras a uma amostra de 2431 residentes em Portugal, bem como um questionário sociodemográfico. Algumas das palavras mais evocadas no núcleo central desta representação foram “morte”, “sofrimento”, “doença” e “dor”. Analisou-se também o núcleo central da representação social de CP em função das variáveis sociodemográficas sexo, religião, classe etária, escolaridade, estado civil, área de residência, já ter sido ou não cuidador de alguém, conhecer ou não alguém que tenha necessitado de cuidados paliativos, e sofrer ou não de alguma doença crónica. Os resultados indicam que os CP são considerados como um culminar em morte, em detrimento dos serviços e vantagens que representam, verificando-se uma desinformação ainda considerável acerca da finalidade e dos benefícios dos CP. De um modo geral, os resultados obtidos refletem a literatura, podendo assim fornecer pistas para a intervenção nesta área, designadamente por parte de profissionais que trabalhem na especialidade dos cuidados paliativos, bem como uma melhor compreensão das necessidades que estão inerentes a este tipo de cuidados, através da compreensão da representação portuguesa de cuidados paliativos.

Palliative Care does not yet apear to be a global concept, existing still several conflicting opinions and perceptions about this kind of health care. For that reason, it is importante to understand what are the palliative care social representations. The porpose of this investigation is to study the social representations of Palliative care in Portugal, according to the structural approach. For that end, it was used the social representations’ Theory of the Central Nucleus, with the free evocation test being aplied to a sample of 2431 people living in Portugal, along with a sosciodemografic questionaire. Some of the most evoced words within the central core of this social representation were “death”, “suffering”, “illness” and “pain”. The central core of the social representation of palliative care was also analysed according to the following sociodemographic variables, sex, religion, age, schooling, marital status, residence área, having or not having been a carer, knwoing or not knwoing someone who has needed palliative care before, and having or not a chronic hillness. The results of this study point to palliative care being considered as culmination in death, inspite of the services and advantages they represent, wich demonstrates a somewhat considerable misinformation about the purpose and benefits of palliative care. In general, the results obtained in this study reflect the litterature, having the possibility to provide clues to the intervention in this area, mainly to professionals who work within the specialty of palliative care,as well as a better understanding of the needs of this kind of care, through the understanding of the portugues social representations of palliative care.
