dc.description.abstract | The study plan of the Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra consists of five years of theoretical training and, in the second semester of the last year, students carry out a curricular internship. Thus, within the scope of this curricular unit, I prepared the present work, which is divided into three distinct parts. In the first one, I approached my journey as an intern at Flamma Vitae Pharmacy under a SWOT analysis, where I critically and objectively analyzed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The same analysis was made for the second part, however, referring to my journey at CUF Descobertas Hospital. In the third and last part I prepared the monograph entitled "Canine Leishmaniasis: Symptoms and Treatments". Canine Leishmaniasis is a zoonosis caused by the parasite Leishmania infantum and transmitted by a sand fly, with P. perniciosus and P.ariasi being the most important species in Portugal. Canids, especially dogs, are the main reservoirs of this parasite. Climate change, namely less severe winters, caused changes in the geographic distribution, resulting in an increase in the incidence of the disease in places that were previously non-endemic. The Mediterranean Basin area and, consequently, Portugal are highly affected regions. This disease has a general effect on the body, since it affects macrophages, with a chronic evolution, without cure, so the commitment to preventive measures is essential. Currently, there are vaccines available on the market, among them, Letifend®, which is safer compared to CaniLeish®. | eng |
