Exploring Youth’s Discursive Construction of Climate Change and Collective Action: the Case of Fridays for Future

Abstract

Nos últimos anos, as greves climáticas tornaram-se um tema central dos atuais movimentos sociais globais. Iniciado por Greta Thunberg, o movimento Fridays For Future é seguido por jovens que, ao fazer “greve” às aulas, se manifestam nas ruas para demonstrar o seu direito de combater coletivamente as alterações climáticas. Este estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar como os jovens encaram o aquecimento global e como explicam a sua ação coletiva no movimento climático Fridays For Future. Esta investigação analisa, portanto, a construção discursiva das realidades sociais, dos atores e do envolvimento dos jovens nesta temática. A pesquisa começa com a pergunta de partida: "Como é que os jovens ativistas da Fridays For Future constroem discursivamente as realidades sociais ligadas às mudanças climáticas, bem como o seu próprio papel nelas?". Foi utilizada uma metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa, baseada sobretudo em entrevistas e outras fontes de análises de discurso. Os resultados sugerem que a edificação de uma identidade coletiva da juventude num movimento climático tem sido bem-sucedida, ainda que sem um oponente ou inimigo genuíno, apenas spoilers e obstáculos, principalmente identificados com políticos e tomadores de decisão e sua inação. No entanto, tais jovens não visam tomar o poder ou alcançar quaisquer objetivos políticos imediatos.Os resultados também apontam que os jovens ativistas climáticos da Fridays For Future apresentam um culto à ciência e à personalidade de sua líder. Por fim, sugere-se que a disciplina das Relações Internacionais deve repensar a chamada ‘política da idade’, destacando a importância da juventude como ator central na política global sem, no entanto, romantizar este ator social.

In recent years, climate strikes have become a main theme of current global movements. Initiated by Greta Thunberg, the Fridays for Future movement is followed by young people who, by “striking” at schools or skipping classes on Fridays, demonstrate in the streets to proclaim their right to collectively fight climate change. This study aims to demonstrate how young people face global warming and how they provide justification for their collective action on Fridays for Future climate movement. It examines, therefore, the discursive construction of social realities, social actors, and young people’s involvement around them. This research begins with the starting question: "How young climate activists from Fridays for Future discursively build social realities linked with climate change, as well as their own role in it?".This study used a qualitative research methodology, based mainly on interviews and other sources of discourse analysis. The findings imply that the construction of a collective identity of youth in a climate movement has been successful, albeit without a genuine opponent or enemy, only spoilers and obstacles, mainly identified with politicians and decision-makers and their inaction. However, such youths do not aim to seize power or achieve any immediate political goals.The results also point out that the young climate activists on Fridays for Future present a cult of science and the personality of their leader. Finally, it is suggested that the discipline of International Relations should rethink the so-called “age politics”, highlighting the importance of youth as a central actor in global politics without, however, romanticizing this social actor.
