Abstract

The role of morphology and green spaces in Urban Heat Island dynamics. The example of the city of CoimbraThe study of the "Urban Heat Island" (UHI) is not a recent thematic on a global scale, since numerous authors have already developed it previously, and it is noteworthy that the same has occurred in large Portuguese cities. Based on the work previously done on UHI in the city of Coimbra itself, the focus of this dissertation is to conduct a current analysis of the phenomenon as well as its interaction with different themes that by coming together can trigger, intensify or even mitigate the phenomenon.This dissertation was developed, based on this climate phenomenon present in the city of Coimbra, by starting the research with a broad bibliographic review, combining themes that are interconnected with the main theme, since that in recent decades it has become inevitable not to highlight the themes of cities and sustainability as one. Currently, these themes are developed jointly, with the main purpose of developing and improving the quality of life in urban spaces. The themes were characterized referencing their functions, their interaction with one another, enhancing the existing goals and objectives of the Agenda 2030 – Sustainable Development Goals – and the "Climate Change Framework Legislation", proving that the future of urban areas will be driven by a sustainable development path.In this context, this research was conducted combining the morphology of the city, green spaces and sustainability with the "Urban Heat Island". A complete characterization of the "Urban Heat Island" was carried out, relating the nocturnal presence of this phenomenon with the location of green spaces and natural or artificial shade during the day, showing several examples of how it can undertake the adaptation of the city to mitigate the "Urban Heat Island", always based on examples of the urban space of Coimbra, while also portraying in some way the possibility of assuming sustainable urbanism in crescendo.With these factors in mind, it is intended to locate and spatialize, as well as understand the dimension of the "Urban Heat Island" in the city of Coimbra, highlighting the most critical places at a thermal level. All this analysis was carried out through campaigns in three different seasons of the year (winter, spring and summer). With the results of the campaigns, it was possible to apply the kriging tool based on the data collected at three moments of three different days. Thus, the behavior and shape of the "Urban Heat Island" was noted, allowing us to understand where it is necessary to act according to the urban morphology and spatial conditions of these sectors, adapting each location to its characteristics.

O exemplo da cidade de CoimbraO estudo da “Ilha de Calor Urbano” (ICU) não é uma temática recente a nível global, já que inúmeros autores já a desenvolveram anteriormente, sendo de realçar que o mesmo se verificou nas grandes cidades portuguesas. O foco desta dissertação é a realização de uma análise atual do fenómeno em simultâneo com a interação desta com diferentes temáticas que se conjugam entre si e que podem desencadear, intensificar ou mesmo atenuar o fenómeno, tendo como base os trabalhos realizados anteriormente sobre a ICU na própria cidade de Coimbra.É com base neste fenómeno climático nesta cidade que foi orientada esta dissertação, pelo que se iniciou a investigação com uma ampla revisão bibliográfica, conjugando temas interligando-os com a temática principal, já que nas últimas décadas tornou-se inevitável não destacar os temas de cidades e de sustentabilidade, como um só. No presente são temáticas que se desenvolvem associadas, com o principal propósito de desenvolver e melhorar a qualidade de vida nos espaços urbanos. Foi feita uma caraterização dos temas referindo as suas funções, a interação entre si, potenciando as metas e objetivos existentes da Agenda 2030 Desenvolvimento Sustentável e da “Lei de Bases do Clima”, comprovando que este será o caminho do futuro para as áreas urbanas, através do desenvolvimento sustentável.Neste contexto direcionou-se esta investigação, conjugando a morfologia da cidade, os espaços verdes, a sustentabilidade, com a “Ilha de Calor Urbano”. Foi feita toda a caraterização da “Ilha de Calor Urbano”, relacionando a presença noturna deste fenómeno com a localização dos espaços verdes e da sombra natural ou artificial durante o dia, mostrando vários exemplos de como pode assumir a adaptação da cidade ao mitigar da “Ilha de Calor Urbano”, sempre com base em exemplos do espaço urbano de Coimbra, retratando de certa forma a possibilidade de assunção de urbanismo sustentável em crescendo.Com isto, pretende-se localizar e espacializar, bem como compreender a dimensão da “Ilha de Calor Urbano” na cidade de Coimbra, destacando os locais mais críticos a nível térmico. Toda esta análise foi realizada através das campanhas efetuadas em três diferentes estações do ano (inverno, primavera e verão). Com os resultados das campanhas foi possível aplicar a ferramenta kriging com base nos dados que recolhidos em três momentos de três diferentes dias. Percebeu-se assim, o seu comportamento e forma da “Ilha de Calor Urbano”, permitindo compreender quais os locais onde é necessário agir em conformidade com a morfologia urbana e condições espaciais desses setores, adaptando cada local às suas características.
