Ansell Portugal identified a problem in the production process of a type of textile gloves they produce. The problem identified relates to one of the tasks that is carried out in the sewing area of the factory, the task of cutting loose threads from the gloves. It was understood by the company that this task did not add value and that it should be considered as rework since it was possible to optimize the process, reducing the number of loose threads. The main goal of this dissertation is to reduce by 80% the number of gloves with loose threads, in other words, the number of gloves that need to be reworked. To this end, the DMAIC methodology is applied, and the 5 phases of the cycle are presented throughout the report. As a result, it was viable to prove, with the opportunities tested, that it was possible to reduce the number of loose threads on gloves by 89.65%, thus eliminating the task of cutting loose threads, transferring this task to the knitting operators. It was also possible to test that a 315.11% increase in FPY is archivable, also as, a 53% decrease in the number of defective gloves and a 12.81% increase in production. With the increase obtained in production, more opportunities were tested to optimize the process and it was concluded that it was also possible to eliminate the task of sewing hemming. However, to make this change it is necessary to purchase 12 new knitting machines. Although the investment is considerable, the company achieves an annual gain of €103,474.70, which leads to a payback of 1.46 years. Consequently, it becomes feasible to make this change and operators in the sewing area can be freed.
