E tudo a viuvez levou? O impacto da morte do cônjuge no papel das mulheres nas famílias

Abstract

Apesar do significativo peso da população idosa na sociedade portuguesa, continua a existir pouca produção científica dedicada às experiências dessa população, e ainda menos sobre mulheres idosas viúvas. Com o objetivo de inverter este cenário, este artigo discute o impacto da viuvez no papel das mulheres nas famílias. A discussão apresentada baseia-se nos contributos de diferentes áreas de conhecimento – como a sociologia da família, os estudos dedicados às mulheres e ao envelhecimento – e nos relatos de quinze mulheres viúvas – recolhidos através da realização de entrevistas em profundidade. Os relatos das mulheres entrevistadas revelaram uma tendência no modo de viver a viuvez, transversal a todas as dimensões das suas vidas, quase sempre orientadas para os outros e quase nunca para si mesmas. As suas trajetórias caracterizam-se por desigualdades múltiplas e são significativamente moldadas por modelos e representações tradicionais, mostrando que nem tudo a viuvez levou.

Despite the significant weight of the elderly population in the Portuguese society, there is still little scientific literature on their experiences, especially on widowed older women. In order to overcome this lack of knowledge, this paper discusses how widowhood impacts the role of women within the family. This discussion is based on a range of contributions from different fields of studies – such as sociology of the family, women’s and ageing studies – and on the narratives of fifteen widowed women – collected through in-depth interviews. The narratives of the women interviewed revealed a pattern in the way of living widowhood, which is present in all dimensions of their lives, mostly oriented to others and rarely to themselves. Their trajectories are marked by multiple inequalities and significantly shaped by traditional models and representations, proving that widowhood did not take everything.
