dc.description.abstract | Time constitutes and is inseparable from life itself, a dimension from which the human being is structured in the world as a dynamic and bodily mediated relationship. Depression, a psychiatric illness whose high prevalence and functional and experiential impact have given it the designation of “the evil of the 21st century”, serves as a starting point for a demonstration of the importance of subjectivity in an increasingly objectified science. A scientific approach, which despite being responsible for a significant evolution in the efficacy and safety of the treatment of psychiatric diseases, continues to show evident limitations in the way it understands the symptoms and the living world of the patient with depression. Starting this work with a contextualization of the depressive disorder, as it is called, defined, and understood in the light of scientific knowledge, we will embark on an exploration of the contributions of a selected group of authors – Eugène Minkowski, Merleau-Ponty and Thomas Fuchs – who seem relevant for an analysis of the experiential aspects of depression, in particular, the experience of time. Based on the considerations of those authors, a phenomenological approach to the experience of time in depression will then be carried out, addressing specific aspects, such as the disturbances of conation-affection and intersubjective temporality. In the final phase of this dissertation, coming from philosophy, we return to medicine, where, supported by real reports of the experience of time in patients with depression and recovering the philosophical considerations of phenomenological orientation of the authors mentioned, we can demonstrate the importance and urgency of a meeting between medicine and philosophy. | eng |
