Polo Seiça: Reabilitação do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça

Abstract

O mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça é um monumento histórico localizado em uma área rural do município da Figueira da Foz, região centro de Portugal. Este monumento fez parte da história desta região desde sua fundação, anterior a 1162, até a chegada do caminho de ferro, com a demolição de parte da sua igreja, e da industrialização nesta zona, com a adaptação do mosteiro à unidade industrial. Sem usos e em estado de abandono desde o final do século XX, o conjunto monástico encontra-se atualmente em ruínas. Este trabalho propõe a reabilitação e adaptação do edificado e de sua envolvente para um novo programa, o “Polo Seiça – Centro de Ensino e Investigação Agroflorestal”, a partir do estudo do mosteiro e de sua envolvente, das práticas atuais de intervenção em património e dos problemas identificados no contexto rural da região. Esta proposta de intervenção conjuga a salvaguarda deste monumento no âmbito patrimonial com a integração de um programa funcional inovador na área agroflorestal. Assim, retoma-se o espírito inicial da fundação do mosteiro, cujos monges introduziram novos processos agrícolas e novas culturas que apoiaram o povoamento desta região. Ao incorporar-se este polo com esta especificidade científica e cultural, ligado em rede com instituições similares, nacionais e internacionais, promove-se a fixação de quadros especialistas para apoio das populações que se dedicam à agricultura e, assim, a sustentabilidade social e ambiental. Este programa de largo espectro funcional, permite propor um novo enquadramento urbano e paisagístico deste lugar, reforçando os atributos patrimoniais do mosteiro enquanto elemento central no desenho urbano proposto. Neste âmbito, também se definem as hierarquias dos novos volumes e a respetiva expressão arquitetónica, em um equilíbrio entre o património em presença e a contemporaneidade da nova arquitetura.

The monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça is a historic monument located in a rural area of the municipality of Figueira da Foz, in the central region of Portugal. This monument was part of the history of this region since its foundation, before 1162, until the construction of the railway, with the demolition of part of its church, and the industrialization in this area, with the adaptation of the monastery to a factory. Unused and abandoned since the end of the 20th century, the monastic complex is currently in ruins. This study proposes the rehabilitation and adaptation of the building and its surroundings for a new program, the “Polo Seiça – Center for Agroforestry Education and Research”, based on the study of the monastery and its surroundings, current practices of intervention in heritage, and the problems identified in the rural context of the region. This intervention proposal combines the preservation of this monument in the patrimonial scope with the integration of an innovative functional program in the agroforestry area. Thus, restoring the initial spirit of the foundation of the monastery, which introduced new agricultural processes and new cultures that supported the settlement of this region. By incorporating this center with this scientific and cultural specificity, connected with similar national and international institutions, the establishment of specialist staff to support populations dedicated to agriculture is promoted and, thus, also is the social and environmental sustainability. This broad program allows the proposal of a new urban and landscape framework for this place, reinforcing the heritage of the monastery as a central element in the proposed urban design. In this scope, the hierarchies of the new volumes and the respective architectural expression are also defined, in a balance between the heritage and the contemporaneity of the new architecture.
