Africanos e afrodescendentes na metrópole portuguesa (século XX): regresso ao “arquivo imperial”

Abstract

Pouco se sabe sobre os africanos e afrodescendentes que viviam em Portugal no período que medeia entre o fim da escravatura e a independência das colónias portuguesas em África. Nestas notas de pesquisa, apresento um breve balanço da produção científica sobre a presença africana em Portugal em perspetiva histórica, para evidenciar o hiato que subsiste relativamente àquele período. Depois, identifico fontes impressas que podemos mobilizar e caminhos imprevistos no “arquivo imperial” que podemos seguir, para dar visibilidade aos habitantes, naturais e nacionais de origem africana no país e, em particular, em Lisboa. Concluo que uma história social das pessoas negras na metrópole imperial está ainda por fazer e exige criatividade heurística e metodológica, mas poderá também contribuir para desmistificar a homologia equívoca entre africano/negro e imigrante/estrangeiro na sociedade portuguesa.

Little is known about Africans and Afro-descendants who lived in Portugal in the period between the end of slavery and the independence of Portuguese colonies in Africa. In this research notes, I present a brief overview of the scholarship on the African presence in Portugal in historical perspective, to highlight the gap that remains in relation to the abovementioned period. Then, I identify printed sources and unforeseen paths on the “imperial archive” to shed light on the inhabitants, naturals and nationals of African origin in the country and, in particular, in Lisbon. I conclude that a social history of Black lives in the imperial metropolis is not yet written and requires heuristic and methodological creativity. It may also contribute to demystify the equivocal homology between African/Black and immigrant/foreigner in Portuguese society.
