A livraria de Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel, 2.º Visconde de Vila Maior

Abstract

This work characterizes the private library of Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel (1809-1884), 2nd Viscount of Vila Maior, which was put up for auction in March 1887 in the city of Coimbra, where he died and at whose University he was rector. Besides enumerating the variety of document typologies in the library, I identified the central thematic nuclei and the most represented languages. The publication of the catalog for bidding ensures a rigorous determination of the collection’s value and facilitates the comparison with others put up for auction under similar conditions. The articulation with complementary information allows understanding some of the acquisition forms that the Viscount resorted to forming his library. The brief and incomplete nature of a large part of the bibliographical references that make up the catalog, on the other hand, required a significant effort to identify each of the approximately 800 items. The result is an enriched and annotated revision of the catalog, which I included in this work, and aims to deepen the knowledge of a singular man of culture, science, and the public cause. © 2021 Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra.

Este trabalho caracteriza a biblioteca particular de Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel (1809-1884), 2.º Visconde de Vila Maior, que foi posta a leilão em março de 1887 na cidade de Coimbra, onde faleceu e em cuja Universidade foi reitor. Para além da enumeração da variedade de tipologia documental da biblioteca, são identificados os principais núcleos temáticos, assim como os idiomas mais representados. A publicação do catálogo, para efeitos da licitação, garante uma determinação rigorosa do valor da coleção, assim como facilita a comparação com outras colocadas a leilão em condições semelhantes, enquanto a articulação com informação complementar permite desenhar algumas das formas de aquisição a que o Visconde recorreu para a formação da sua biblioteca. O carácter muito sumário de grande parte das referências bibliográficas de que se compõe o catálogo, por outro lado, obrigou a um esforço significativo de identificação de cada um dos cerca de oitocentos itens. O resultado é uma revisão enriquecida e anotada do catálogo, que se encontra incluída neste trabalho, e que pretende contribuir para aprofundar o conhecimento de um singular homem de cultura, de ciência e da causa pública.
